Book Review ~ Between Love and War by Sheri Velarde

About the Book:

After the Fall, Ares spent a thousand years searching for his lost love Mania. Thinking he had lost her forever, he settled into the life of a mercenary here on earth. Then the fates, and his sister the goddess of love, showed him Mania was alive and well. He travels to London hoping to regain what he had thought lost forever.

Mania had spent a millennia as a wraith of madness before slowly starting to rebuild herself into a new and independent woman. Art had been her outlet and her savior. Then one night her world is turned upside down when her old love walks back into her life. Can she love him again and still remain the woman that she had become?

Unbeknownst to both of them a mysterious organization is lurking in the background and threatening to unravel the lives of all the gods on earth.

My Review:

Many years ago, the gods we learned about in mythology were cast out of Heaven during Zeus' hostile takeover of the heavens, known as The Fall.  In that time frame, Ares and his love, Mania were separated.  Stripped of their intense powers, these gods were left to flounder in a world quite different that what they all were used to.

Ronan, who is actually Ares, the God of War, is currently in London awaiting the reappearance of his love, Mania.  She has been MIA on earth for 2,000 years, keeping herself hidden away until recently.  Ronan called in a favor to his nephew Eros who quickly tracked down Mania's current location and pseudonym, Maia Dempsey.

Unaccustomed to being with any of her "kind," Mania is surprised to find Ares standing the art gallery currently displaying her work.  Her reaction was typical of someone caught off guard.  Not wanting to rush into a re-acquaintance with Ares, Mania asks for time to get used to the idea.

In the meantime, someone is tracking down the fallen gods and goddesses.  They are being kidnapped one by one by a nefarious organization.  Those involved threaten to expose the gods and goddesses to the world which will have disastrous results.

Between Love and War is a short story about finding your long lost love - even if it takes you 2,000 years.  Ronan (Ares) and Maia (Mania) have great chemistry. It does take Maia a small amount of time to let herself remember the feelings she had for Ares.  Both Ronan and Maia are well written, well developed characters.

Many gods and goddesses have cameos in the story.  They are well placed and not just tossed in as fluff or story fodder. These secondary characters have purpose within the pages.  The best conversation in the entire story happens between Ronan and his sister, Aphrodite.

I enjoyed this quick, engaging, and romantic short story.

Review copy provided by the author, at no cost, in exchange for an honest review.
Please note that this review is for the 2015 release of the short story.

Read an Excerpt:

For a few seconds he stood absolutely still, resting his head back on the wall, looking up at the squares in the ceiling. The door to the bathrooms opened and he immediately straightened, no way was he letting anyone catch him looking like he’d just got bad news. His eyebrows raised when he realized it was Rachel coming out from the ladies, her heels in one hand, an empty bottle of wine in the other, and she looked disheveled. He’d never seen her go in, so she’d probably been doing whatever girls did in bathrooms for such a long time, talking, or whatever. But no one else came out after her. And yeah, she looked wild-eyed and messed up. He couldn’t think of another word for it, her dress creased and rucked up on one side, her eyes bright, and a wide grin on her face.

“Hey sexy-Danny,” she slurred and gestured with the bottle which missed his arm by an inch. “You waitin’ for me?”

Danny pocketed his phone and relieved her of the bottle, placing it carefully on the floor before she beaned him with it. Then he took her arm when she wobbled dangerously.

“You’re drunk,” he announced.

She blinked up at him like this was a new thing to her, then giggled. Yep, full on giggled, before leaning on him and grasping his shirt in a fist. “I know.”

He held her so she wouldn’t fall, which necessitated one hand on her left arm, the other on her right hip. She was just the right size for the hold, fit into his arms just perfectly, despite the fact she was swaying. Then she moved, and ended up with her cheek on his chest, her heels dropping to the floor.

“Your chest,” she murmured against him.

“My chest what?” he asked, although he knew he wasn’t going to get an answer. He looked around in the vain hope someone was here to help her.

She pulled back, and he supported her again, and she looked up at him, her jade eyes swimming with tears. Then, in a messy uncoordinated movement, she went up on tiptoes and placed a wet kiss on his lips. Her aim was a little off, it was more half lip half face, but there was tongue, and Danny had never had such a sexy, unsexy, kiss before in his life. Didn’t matter that she was gorgeous and Danny really wouldn’t have minded a kiss. Nope, she was drunk, and needed her family, not some exhausted dad with brittle walls of protection.

He pressed her away gently, even as she chased for the kiss, and held her at arm’s length. She frowned at him.

“What’s wrong? Everyone wants to kiss me,” she announced.

This was clearly some kind of post trauma thing going on here. That confrontation with the guy in the garden had probably caused it. “I’ll get your mom.”

“Hell, no.”

“Kyle then.”

She yanked herself away, stumbling back and righting herself by leaning against the wall on the opposite side of the corridor. “Him? No,” she said.

She closed her eyes momentarily then opened them as she sighed. “Why don’t you want to kiss me?” she said.

“Because you’re drunk.”

Rachel pulled herself straight, and took the two steps to get back into his space, shoving him a little, and he was in the small alcove by the emergency door, his back to the glass.

“No. I’m. Not,” she said, very deliberately. Then she wrapped her hands around his neck. “I just need a kiss,” she murmured. “A nice one from a nice man.” The last she said really quietly and he had to strain to hear the words. And then he couldn’t think anymore. She pressed her lips to his, but not sloppy drunk and off target. No, this was calm, gentle, her tongue tasting the seam of his lips, and pressing for entrance. He could fight it, he could extricate himself if he wanted to, but his head spun with the bad news he’d gotten from Sam, and Rachel was as sexy to taste as she was to touch.

His lips parted and he deepened the kiss; he tasted wine and Rachel, and it was every bit as good as he’d imagined it would be. Call it the emotional intensity of that phone call or call it proximity, whatever it was, he was hard so damn fast. Hard and needy, and all he wanted was more of whatever Rachel was offering.

She pressed closer, his hand caught between them, he only had to move it a little, and he was caressing her belly. A little lower and she pushed at his hand so he cupped her mound, and she moved against him sinuously, a moan low in her throat.

And it was that moan that had him crashing back to reality. What the hell was he doing kissing a woman who was obviously drunk, and pressing against her like that?

Gently but firmly he disentangled himself and eased her away. She chased for the kiss, her eyes closed, but he couldn’t let this go on. She opened her eyes on a small sigh, and he could see the moment when reality crashed into her thoughts. Her eyes widened and she stepped back, a hand covering her mouth.

Then she slid her way down the wall, smoothly, until she was on the carpet. He crouched down in front of her.

“I’ll get some water.”

“No, don’t go, I don’t do this, not since college,” she said, so quietly he had to strain to hear.

“Getting drunk, you mean?” he asked.

“Yeah. It’s scared.”

It’s scared? “What’s scared.”

As Matthew moves in with Drakon on his country estate and slowly finds himself cut off from the world around him, he begins to wonder if that animal magnetism is more literal than figurative and if Drakon would be more aptly named Dragon.

He grabbed the coffee cups off the table, whistling low and easy. His hips were still sore from last night’s dancing, but it felt good, fine, a sweet burn.

Jennie popped his ass as she walked by. “You’re too cheerful for words, Matt-baby. You get laid last night?”

Matt shook his head, red curls falling into his eyes. “Just dancing, Miss Thing. Just boogying.”

She laughed and headed on, coffee pot held tight in her hand.

Two men came in together, one older, distinguished looking. Like a British butler, really. The other was tall, striking, with hair like a mane, dark gold surrounding a golden face and falling down the man’s back.

They sat at one of his tables.

Fucking hot.

He headed over, two menus in hand, telling his jumpy prick to behave. “Afternoon, guys. I’m Matt. Can I get you some coffee? Tea?”

“What about you?” asked the hot one.

Matt blinked, blushed dark, and then recovered with a grin. Flirting. He could do flirting. “I’m working and not on the menu, sadly enough.”

“I guess I shall have to settle for tea, then. I don’t suppose you have something wild and strong?”

“We’ve got a nice blackberry and black tea.” He craned his neck, looking at the specials board. “And another from South America that people seem to like.”

The man growled, actually growled, looking discontentedly at his companion.

“I would be happy to drive you home and serve you what you want, Master Drakon.”

The growling stopped, the hot guy’s mouth twitching into a half smile. “I am most certain that you would not, Wetthers, though you are right, we have better teas at home.”

“Master Drakon” turned back to him, and Matt realized that one of the man’s eyes was brown, the other blue. “How much are they paying you to serve here?”

“Excuse me?” He blinked again. What an odd man.

The man’s eyes narrowed and he asked the question again, enunciating each word very carefully. Matt noticed he had an accent, just barely there. “I asked you how much are they paying you to work here.”

“I heard you, sir. I was just making sure I heard you right.” Rude asshole. “I make minimum wage plus tips, same as every waiter in this town. Are you always this ill-mannered or am I just really lucky?”

To his surprise, the man laughed, the sound low and rich. “Oh, you are a feisty one. Go tell them you have been employed elsewhere and we will leave for my estate immediately. I shall double your salary and of course room and board shall be included. Wetthers will settle all the pesky details with you and the IRS as necessary.”

Matt looked over at the old guy. “Is he for real? I mean, dude, you need a waiter at home?”

The old man seemed quite unperturbed by the goings on. “Master Drakon has made you an offer, young man. If you wish to accept it, I can assure you that it is ‘for real.’”

“Look, I’m not an idiot or a whore. You come in and tell me to quit my job and come with you without so much as sharing names, or you knowing more than I can walk and read a chalkboard.” He shook his head, fingers moving to his side, his skin burning. “I’m flattered, but no, thank you.”

The hot one—Drakon—growled again and stood. “Well, if you change your mind and decide you want to know about the handprint on your ass, maybe I’ll be willing to see you.” Drakon patted his ass, but not right on, more to the side where his birthmark was. With that, the man walked out.

The man named Wetthers handed Matt a card with a stylized dragon on it and the words Drakon Estates. There was a number beneath it. “If you change your mind. Be very sure before you call.”

“Right. Thanks.” He watched the guy leave and shook his head. “Fucking weird. You see that, Jennie? That dude just propositioned me!”

“Weird.” Jennie shook her head. “Glad he left before your shift was up. I hate waiting on assholes.”

“Yeah.” He nodded and pushed the card into his pocket. Real weird.

Guess he’d have to go dancing tonight to work off the memory.

Whistling, he went back to doing his side work, mind filled with music.

Phoenix didn’t have things easy growing up. His mother spent most of her life in a mental institution, and he spent his formative years in foster care. When a stranger approaches to learn about his family history, he’s wary. When said stranger actually kidnaps him, all bets are off!

Read an Excerpt:

Grio sat in his SUV, splitting his attention between the students walking across the quad and the file in his hand.

Professor Phoenix Lamoure. Actually, the guy was a TA, not a professor.

He was going to have to ride Danny next time he spoke to the man. It wasn’t often that the office sent out incorrect information, and he made the most of it when they did. Of course he’d rib Danny privately. No need to get him in trouble with the boss. Nigel didn’t have much of a sense of humor.

Phoenix Lamoure was a tiger shifter like himself, even if the man didn’t know it yet. A lot of shifters remained dormant and died never knowing what they really were.

The Saffron Tigers, though, they were nearly extinct, so they didn’t have the luxury of letting their kind discover themselves, or not. Headquarters searched out potential weres and Grio—or Janey or Tuplo—were sent to flush them out.

Grio looked at the file again, examining the black-and-white image closely to make sure he’d recognize Phoenix when he saw the man.

There were only one hundred and nineteen Saffron Tigers left and they needed numbers, needed safety. Needed each other.

Phoenix wasn’t your typical Saffron Tiger. Instead of bulk and broadness, he was slender, the little wire-rimmed glasses perched on the end of his nose adding an air of fragility or delicateness that Grio imagined was quite false. Knowing it or not, if Phoenix had tiger blood in him, he would be fierce when he had to be.

A small group of students walked by, a shock of unmistakable bright red hair hitting his eyes. Jesus. This one wasn’t just a Saffron. He was descended from the royal line.

How had he missed that? He checked the file again. Grainy black-and-white photo from some old high school yearbook. No wonder. Not only that, the file made no mention that this one was a royal.

Slipping out of the SUV, Grio closed the door silently, then quietly stalked his prey.

The two girls in the group of six headed off toward the parking lot, and he heard, “Nixie? You want to grab a pizza and a beer?”

“I don’t know. I have papers to grade…”

Grio considered his options. He could follow Phoenix to somewhere quiet, or he could “bump into” the man now.

“Come on, man. All you do is work,” wheedled the young man.

Phoenix gave a snort. “If you were Dr. Lee’s TA, you’d work, too.”

Dr. Lee. That was more information than Grio’d had a moment ago. He decided to wing it.

“Excuse me, did you say you were Dr. Lee’s TA?”

“I did, yeah.” Eyes that were pure gold met his, warm behind the wire-rimmed glasses. “Can I help you?”

“Yes, I had a few questions for you. Is there somewhere we could go and talk?” Grio gave Phoenix his best and most earnest smile.

About the Book:

The first full moon is always the hardest.

Danny McMann has been busy on pack business for weeks and just wants to spend the upcoming full moon deep in the woods with his pack—running, hunting, napping and generally goofing off. The last thing he wants to hear is that they’ve got another man on their hands who’s been bitten and about to turn with the arrival of the full moon.

Hammond Argyle was bitten by his assailant in a bar fight a few weeks ago. He’s been in a foul mood ever since and it’s only getting worse. As is the way his skin itches and feels like it doesn’t fit him anymore. When someone starts lurking round, following him, it’s about all he can take.

Will Danny be able to help Hammond through his first change and beyond?

Amazon ARe

Read an Excerpt:

Hamm was going out of his fucking mind. He was itchy, like all over, scratch his skin right off to make it better itchy. Speaking of skin, his didn’t fit right, either. And it was getting worse. It was getting so he was going to take someone’s head off soon, just for talking to him. Not only that, now some asshole was following him.

Growling—literally fucking growling—he cut through the park. The form that had been following him for hours, staying far enough back that Hamm couldn’t focus on him, moved with him. And when he stopped it disappeared entirely, so he couldn’t even go confront the guy.

Between that and the not feeling right in his skin, he was on the very edge of doing something desperate. He wasn’t sure exactly what, but it was going to happen soon.

He scratched his shoulder. He’d been bitten—fucking bitten!—during a fight. This dude had attacked him and he held his own, even though the guy was viciously strong. He hadn’t even done anything to provoke the attack, goddamn it. It was weeks ago, but he’d been on edge since then. And the goddamn bite was still aching like it was festering, even though it looked well enough healed when he checked it in the mirror.

If Hamm went by how his luck had been going lately, the guy following him was the same guy who’d bitten him, coming back for more. Just what he fucking needed. Goddamn.

He was almost through the park when he stopped and turned abruptly, ready to run and confront his stalker, hoping the element of surprise would keep the guy from disappearing into the shadows this time. And he’d be goddamned if it didn’t work.

The guy—because it was a lean guy with a shock of dark auburn hair—was right there, bright gold eyes shining at him.

“You better have a fucking good reason for being on my ass.” He snarled out the words, not willing to take any guff, even though the guy was hot. And where had that thought come from? He was itchy and out of sorts, goddamn it, not looking to flirt, or even admire silently.

“I came to help.” The words were low, oddly calming.

“What?” He took a step back, startled by the answer and by the way it the man’s voice seemed to diffuse some of his anger.

“I came to help. You’re itching. I can help.”

Who was this impertinent kid?

“How do you know that?” he demanded. He hadn’t told a soul what had happened or how he was feeling.

“I can smell it on you.” How did this lean little thing not seem scared of him at all?

“Are you saying I smell?” He wasn’t sure if that made him more annoyed or not.

“Everyone smells.”

“Then why the fuck would you— You know what? Forget it. Just stop, okay?” He didn’t need this. “I don’t fucking know you from Adam, so get off my ass.”

“I’m Daniel. Daniel McMann.” One hand was held out, the confidence pouring off the man.

He answered automatically, even though he’d had no intention at all of giving this Daniel who’d been following him all day long his name. “Hammond Argyle.” And since when did he lose control of situations? Ever since he’d been fucking bitten, that’s when.

Daniel smiled at him. “That is a fabulous name, my fellow Scot.”

Hamm actually chuckled. That was not the reaction he usually got. “Thanks.”

He finally, begrudgingly, took Daniel’s hand, electricity slamming through him at the contact. He yanked his hand back, starring. “What the fuck? Did you feel that?”

Daniel nodded, blinked as if dazed, as if this had finally fazed the little fucker. “That’s never happened before.”

Surprisingly, that actually made Hamm feel better. “Shake a lot of strangers’ hands, do you?”

“Well, sure. But you’re not a stranger. You’re just a mate I haven’t met yet.”

Okay, so this guy was a little out there. His best course of action was probably to extricate himself from Daniel’s company as painlessly as possible. Instead, Hamm found himself saying, “Sure. Sure. So why were you following me?”

“I told you. I came to help. You were bitten. It’s my job to help with it.” Daniel said it as if that explained everything.

“Are you a cop? Do you guys have a…a lead?” Could the cops be looking into something he hadn’t actually reported? Maybe someone at the bar had phoned in an anonymous tip or something.

“I’m a… Well, I’m like a guidance counselor in the loosest sense of the word.”

Hamm stared at the guy. “I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.” There were words and they seemed to be forming sentences, but Hamm couldn’t figure out what Daniel was trying to tell him.

“I know. Come have a drink with me?”

“I…” Hamm hesitated, still not convinced this guy wasn’t a nutjob. On the other hand, he felt better than he had in days, and that had started when he’d confronted Daniel. Coincidence, right? Still… “Okay.”

“Cool. Where’s good? I could use a snack, too.” This dude was bouncy as hell.

“There’s a pub on the corner of the park.” Close enough to home, too, but Danny-boy didn’t need to know that.

“Sounds perfect. I’m ravenous. Nice park.”

“It’s…a park.” Hamm started toward the Flying Pig.

“Nice mowed grass. I live in the woods.”

Hamm looked around. There was indeed lots of mowed grass, but also some trees that a couple of paths meandered through. He shrugged again and grinned. “It’s a park.”

“Yep.” There was a knowing, weirdly odd grin on the kid’s face.

This guy was going to drive him crazy. Hamm could tell. He growled deep in his chest, like a warning or something, but the kid just bounced along.

Hamm shook his head. When he was feeling better, he’d show Danny who was boss. Whoa. When he was feeling better, Danny was going to be in his rear view mirror, right? Right. Hamm was not into long-haired twinks.

Feeling more himself than he’d felt in long time, he held the door to the Pig open for Danny.

Danny shot him a smile. “Thank you.”

He swore, and for a second he thought he saw a tail wagging on the end of Danny’s ass. Shaking his head to clear it, Hamm nodded to Wilson behind the bar and pointed out a booth at the back of the place to Danny.

“Perfect!” God, this guy really was a nut.

When head bullfighter Denton is killed by a demon bull, his twin, Denver, comes back to take his place. Denver was gone for years, working mundane rodeos and missing his twin. He’s not sure the pack can heal him since the other bullfighters challenge Denver at every turn. All except Blaine, who’s an outcast himself, and who knows Denver is like no one he’s ever met.

Read an Excerpt:

Denver was—wow.

Denton had been stunning, making Blaine stare a lot. A lot. Still, Dent had been off-limits, and he’d bet Denver was, too. No one could be that hot and be like Blaine.

He was the weird one, the one brought into the pack by a she-wolf who had already had a single pup. Blaine figured he was lucky no one had killed him when he was a kid.

Everyone else was broad and wide, shaggy-headed with eyes like green glass. All of them came from the same line. Denver was the spitting image of Denton, really. A little harder around the edges, a little more wild. A shit ton more bruised.

The guys had been taking turns. Two a night, just like clockwork, they’d come and challenge Denver. One at midnight, one at three a.m. Greg and Vince went, then Carter and Caul, and finally Hank and Mike. Boom.

He supposed Denver was waiting for him now. Blaine sighed. He had no intention of trying to take the pack. God, the very idea made his head hurt.

The real question was, were they going to just start over, or was Denver going to get a night off, a chance to sleep before they settled in town for tonight’s show?

Eventually they’d kill Denver, too. Someone would get lucky, and the Alpha would get tired. Then where would they be? None of the others were really natural leaders.

Blaine glanced away to make sure no one else was about. When he looked back at Denver, the man was staring back at him. Damn. Caught.

One eye was black, damn near swollen shut, but the other watched him like a hawk.

He didn’t turn tail like he wanted to, and he fought down a nervous smile, managing a nod instead. Then he grabbed his proverbial bootstraps and pulled his courage up out of his socks.

“Hey. You need anything, man? I was gonna go get a hamburger.”

“Thank you, no.” Denver’s head tilted, the look pure Denton down to a T. “Is it your turn tonight? Seems like a shitty deal, to be left to fight on your own.”

“Well, I never did pair up.” He shrugged. “I don’t want your job. If that means I ain’t good enough to work with you, I’ll fight. But if you can handle that, I’ll have your back.”

“You were good enough for Dent; you’re good enough for me.”

“Thanks.” Relief flowed through him. Acceptance wasn’t always easy when you were different. Wolves could turn on anyone with weird eyes or a bad leg. Or not-pack blood. “Well. You sure you don’t want some food?”

“Honey, I appreciate it, but they’ll turn on you. It’s how it works. ’Sides, my jaw’s tender.” He got a half grin, and he didn’t get it. Denver was supposed to be, like, this violent, leather-wearing biker asshole. Not a guy who grinned.

“Shit, they always called me Dent’s whipping boy. They let me stay because I’m fast and stronger than I look. I have a way with the stock.”

“Yeah? I need to learn them. I’ll buy food, you tell me about them. All of them. I’ve been working mundane shows.”

“Oh, then you’re in for a whole new world.” Even the regular bulls were genetically engineered these days so hardly anyone could stay on them, but their show? Holy-shit-moly.

“I worked the show under Elvin.”

Whoa. Elvin had trained Dent, too. The man was a legend. Dead, but a legend. Sort of like Dent.

“You’ll do all right, then, but there are a few to watch out for.” He would be happy to be the one to fill in Denver on their big beasts.

Denver walked with him, solid and quiet. Still.

Blaine felt the urge to babble, which he never did. He was the quiet one, for fuck’s sake. He knew to keep his fucking head down and stay under the fucking radar.

“Huh?” He’d been so busy keeping his head down, he’d missed what Denver had asked. Smooth.

“I just asked which ones you like best, the burgers.”

“Oh, the double bacon cowboy burger.” His mouth watered at the name.

“What makes it a cowboy burger?”

“Barbecue sauce and fried onions.” He loved that sweet and sour and crispy bacon goodness. His belly rumbled. He was so damned hungry. He’d never admit it to Denver, but half the reason he wanted to eat with the man was that the pack had been, uh, denying him some resources.

Speaking of, Mike came around the corner, snarling. “What are you doing with him, Stubby?”

God, he hated that fucking nickname.

Before he could answer, Denver growled, the sound raising his hackles. “Are you questioning me, pup?”

Mike stared, belligerent as all hell, but his bruises told the story. Denver had beat him down. Mike finally looked away. “No, sir.”

“I didn’t think so.” Denver watched until Mike left, then they kept walking.

“That was amazing.” Blaine could fight. God knew he could take a hit from two thousand pounds of pissed-off beef on the hoof and keep going. But he’d never seen Mikey back off that fast, not even from Dent.

“So, Stubby? Seriously? Doesn’t seem to suit.”

His cheeks heated, and Blaine put his hands in his pockets. “I hate it.”

“Good to know.” Laconic didn’t begin to describe this man. Getting words out was like pulling teeth.

“Yeah. I mean, that way you can only use it when you want to piss me off.”

“That’s fair. You work the final night?”

“I do.” No one could deny he had a way with Bricklayer. That damned bull was always a top draw, and he was mean as a snake.

“Good.” Somehow the single word felt like a stamp of approval.

“Hello?” Blaze rapped on the door. “Come on. I know you’re in there.” He rolled his eyes at the silence that answered him. “Look, we can do this all afternoon, or you can just open the fucking door. I know what you are. I’m not here to hurt you.” Still nothing. “Oh, for… I really don’t want to break the door down. I bruise like an overripe peach.”

After another few moments, he heard the floor creak, and the lock on the door slide free.

The door swung inward, revealing a man who looked only slightly younger than himself, and a boy. The child looked no older than ten years. He was a slight thing, skinny, but his wide, liquid brown eyes glittered with fear and a spark of curiosity.

The man stepped in front of the boy as if to protect the child from Blaze. His green eyes were hard with suspicion, but that didn’t stop Blaze from noting his high cheekbones, and lean, hard body clad in a tight, worn t-shirt and denim, or the inky black hair that fell in a sleek sheet past his shoulders.

Blaze cleared his throat. “Look, I know you’re a supernatural. So am I. We’re on the same side. My name is Blaze.”

“Supernatural? What’s that?” The man’s lips mashed into a thin, tense line.

“Come on. Neither of us is stupid. You can sense it in me. I know you can.”

The man chewed on his lip, staring hard at Blaze for a moment, then seemed to come to a decision. He gave a short nod. “I’m Zack. The boy is Mikey. At least, that’s what I call him. I don’t know his real name. He doesn’t talk.”

Blaze glanced at the boy. Small for his age, almost scrawny. He had brown hair, huge, dark eyes, and milk-pale skin. Blaze spotted the faint markings of faded bruises on the child’s face. “Mind telling me how a supernatural came to be squatting in a farmhouse with a mundane kid?”

Zack reached behind him, as if to prove to himself Mikey was still there, and all right. “It’s not much of a story. I was in Kansas City, working for a supe who owned a pizza place. I made deliveries, helped clean, that sort of thing.”

Blaze nodded. “Go on.”

“I had a delivery in a part of town that was pretty worn down. You know, tenements, some abandoned buildings, drug dealers, hookers on the corner, that sort of thing. I made the delivery in a building that was only one-step up from condemned. When I was walking down the hallway, I heard a kid screaming.”

“Let me guess… you played hero and busted down the door to save him.”

Zack cocked his head and narrowed his eyes. “There was a child screaming bloody murder. You wouldn’t?”

Blaze tried to stare Zack down, but couldn’t. He rolled his eyes and tried to hedge instead. “Only someone stupid or with a death wish would do it.”

Zack’s lips tilted in a smirk. “Which one are you?”

Blaze snorted. “Never mind. So, what happened?”

“The door was unlocked, so I opened it and went inside. There was a male mundane, big guy, six-foot easy, maybe two-twenty, two-thirty, and he’s wailing on this little kid. The kid is crying, and saying ‘no, please stop, please stop.’ What was I supposed to do? Walk away?”

“Most supes would say yes.”

“Yeah, well, not this one. I know what it’s like to be on the wrong end of a fist. I got the kid out.”

Blaze gave Zack the once-over. “You’re lean, and going up against a human weighing in at two-thirty? How did you manage that?”

“I never had to touch him.” For the first time, Zack smiled, and the effect was devastating. His curved lips transformed his face from merely good-looking to truly gorgeous. Twin dimples winked at Blaze, and his green eyes flashed with humor. “I’m telekinetic. I picked that big bastard up and floated him right out of the window. Let him hover in the air until he fucking wet his pants, then put him up on the roof of the building next door. Took the kid and split. That was the last time I heard Mikey speak. I think maybe his throat was injured in the beating.”

“Look, I understand you helping the kid and all, but isn’t that kidnapping?” The last thing Blaze needed was to get involved in a criminal activity which might bring the eyes of the police on the rodeo.

Zack shook his head. “No. When we got away, I gave him a pen and paper, asked him if that was his dad. He said no. Said the guy stole him from the orphanage.”

“He’s an orphan?”

“That’s what he says. Or writes. He doesn’t want to go back there. It’s not a nice place, I think. The other kids are bigger, and mean to him, and the nuns who ran it weren’t much better.”

Blaze sniffed. “Who is this kid? Oliver Twist?”

Zack glared at him. “Nobody is asking for your opinion or your permission.”

“You’re right, you’re right. My apologies. You’re a good man for taking care of him.”

Zack seemed mollified. “Who are you, anyway?”

“Like I said, my name is Blaze. Blaze Morgan. I’m the patch for the Darque and Knight Rodeo. Ever heard of us?” He looked back and forth between Zack and Mikey, noting the blank expressions on both faces. “We’re the only professional rodeo staffed by and performing for supernaturals. We travel the country every year performing in little towns just like this one. Gonna be setting up here in a few hours. Which brings me to my, er… little problem. You see, you’re squatting in what’s going to be the middle of our rodeo.”

“We got no place else to go. And we were here first.” Zack’s expression grew hard again, the muscles in his arms bunching as his hands curled into fists. It was obvious he was gearing up for a fight.

Blaze held his hands out. The last thing he needed was a busted nose from some hayseed Supe squatter. “Whoa. Now, we don’t want any trouble. I understand. Really, I do. But the kid can’t stay here. He’s human. You can, since you’re a supe, but not him.”

“If I stay, he stays, and no matter what you say, neither of us is going anywhere.”

“Come on, Zack. Be reasonable. There’s going to be a whole shitload of supes pulling in here in the next few hours. If they see the kid, they’ll go apeshit.”

“Then tell them to go somewhere else.”

Blaze shook his head. “I can’t. I’m not the one in charge.”

“Then we’ll talk to the person who is.”

Meet the Author:

I like writing about the very ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors or corporate highrollers. I try to write characters who aren't cookie cutters and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box. I love writing characters who are real, complex and full of flaws, heroes and heroines who find redemption through love.
