Review: Hand Job by Spencer Dryden

About Hand Job:

Jack Reed is a thirty-something handyman and aspiring erotic fiction writer with fantasies about Jodie, a barista at the coffee shop where he writes every day.

His dreams begin to materialize when Jodie offers him a quick palm reading, hinting at sex with her. She invites Jack to her boutique for a more complete session. Her reading predicts Jack's artisan hands will be pleasing to a woman. Their session interrupted, she invites him to her house that evening for further revelation.

Uncertain of Jodie's intentions, but drawn by her allure, Jack goes to her house expecting additional interpretation in exchange for handyman work. What he receives is far more than he bargained for.

My Thoughts:

Hand Job is a pretty short story but it pleasantly surprised me in both steam and plot content. Jack is a handyman that moonlights as an aspiring erotic fiction writer. He writes at a local coffee ship where he can fantasize about his favorite barista, Jodie.

Jodie is isn't only a barista. She's a palm reader working at the coffee shop to pay the bills while getting her own shop, The Metaphysical Emporium set up and stable. What starts out as a hint about Jack's cock size and getting to use it soon, he finds himself at her shop for a quick palm reading. This, then, turns into much more than he anticipated.

I've now read two short stories by Spencer Dryden with the younger man/older woman coupling. I love them! As a female with a younger male spouse, it helps me relate to the characters a bit more than maybe I would otherwise. Spencer infuses humor and wit in his work, adding another great element to his highly erotic tales.

Hand Job is a quick story that flows along nicely. The story is engaging and the characters are interesting. The steam is hot, spicy, and realistically written. If you're looking for a short, erotic romance that actually has a plot, check out Hand Job (or Tricks of the Trade) by Spencer Dryden.

About The Author:

I am a retired military wife and homeschool mom. I have often joked that we started our second life when daughter graduated from school, and then less than a year later hubby retired from military. But the reality is, we did start a new life, because life as we had known it for so many years, went through a drastic change.

It was about four years ago that my daughter started urging me to write. "You have a great imagination for storytelling!" She insisted. I didn't think so, but decided to give it a try. We spent many hours sitting at our local Wendy's brainstorming the story line for my books. And while she insists I have such a great imagination, she is the one that truly has the gift for writing action scenes and has given me many fantastic ideas to incorporate in my books.

My writing has become a family affair. My husband runs my website; I would have never been able to set it up and have it running smoothly. My daughter helps me keep up with all of the social media, and is now my full time writing partner. It didn't take us very long to realize that we each specialized in different areas, and when put together, we rock! The fact that the family is involved in making my dream come true makes this journey fun. We can be found sitting around the table tossing around ideas for future stories, or how a story can be improved often.

When not writing, I love to read, and play games with the family. Friday night is family game night. I make homemade pizza and we play cards, board games, or WII tennis and bowling. I have broken at least ten WII tennis rackets from hitting the ceiling fan or furniture. I've even come close to hitting my own daughter! She doesn't think it is very amusing, but still loves to sit on the couch and watch mom and dad at war.

Book Blast ~ Autumn Leaves by Barbara Winkes #Giveaway #FF #Romance

With one revelation, her world will shift forever.

Genre: F/F Romance

About Autumn Leaves:

Rebecca has everything she ever dreamed of in life: a family, a beautiful home and good friends. When Callie moves into the house across the street, Rebecca is quick to welcome the young writer into the tightly-knit community of Autumn Leaves. She has no idea that Callie will confront her with a truth about herself she might not be ready to face.

All Callie wanted was to flee the big city and finish her latest book in peace, but life in the small town comes with unexpected temptation and danger.

Read an Excerpt:

“Let’s see, you bring me food and booze. You’ve known me for five minutes and still haven’t said I talk too much, and you’re fixing my faucet? You’re already my favorite neighbor.”

You could be mine, Rebecca thought, pleased. She set down her cup and got up. “All right, I need to get Maggie from practice in a little while, so I better get started.” She discarded the cardigan and hung it over a chair, stepped out of her pumps and put them underneath. The black T-shirt she wore and the slacks were fine for this kind of work. She could come up with a verdict quickly. “I think it’s just the mounting nut under the sink that needs to be tightened.”

“Um…” Callie didn’t seem to know what to make of that piece of information. “Whatever you say.”

“Don’t worry, it’s nothing serious. Cole’s prices are outrageous anyway. So what do you do?” Rebecca asked, still half-buried under the sink.

“I write,” Callie said.

“What kind of things?”

“Lesbian erotica.”

“Ow!” Getting upright, Rebecca promptly hit her head. Callie had some kind of humor. A good thing Betty wasn’t here or the story would have easily topped the no-name-Hollywood-actress one.

“You want me to work on your pipes and not mess up the job, don’t say things like that.” “Why? It’s true.”

Rebecca came out from under her temporary workplace to look at her neighbor skeptically. “There’s a market for that? Really?”

“I can afford to keep this house, if that’s what you meant.” Callie’s tone was somewhat guarded now.

“Sure. Whatever.” There was an indiscreet question on the tip of her tongue, and Rebecca thought she’d better finish here before it slipped out.

“I write all kinds of things.” Callie sighed. “This is just one section, you know. If you want to ask, just ask me already.”

“None of my business. The faucet should be okay now.”

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.” Rebecca let the water run for a moment, then turned it off, satisfied that there was no more noisy dripping. “I’m sorry,” she said after a moment of hesitation. “It’s your life. I didn’t mean to judge.”

“Well,” Callie said somberly, “sometimes, when people say I talk too much, I suppose they’re right.”

“No, they’re not. I asked. If you want some advice, though, don’t tell everybody. News travels fast in a small community.” Realizing what she’d just said Rebecca shook her head. “Now listen to me. You’ve been here for a day and I’m already scaring you off. I’m sorry.”

“No harm done. I appreciate the warning. Besides, I write children’s books too. Oh, and, Rebecca…?” Her hand already on the door handle, Rebecca turned around. “Feel free to come over whenever you like. I’ll be here most of the time, writing, and I love distractions.”

Rebecca felt ridiculously relieved that Callie didn’t begrudge her the earlier misunderstanding. “I’ll remember that,” she said. “Don’t forget to call off the plumber.”

Suit Yourself Blog Tour ~ Men of London series by Susan Mac Nicol #MM

Scarred both physically and emotionally after a motorcycle accident, twenty-five year old ex fashion model and porn star Oliver Brown is about to be stripped bare by flamboyant twink Leslie Scott—and they’ll rebuild love from the bottom up.

BARING THE BEAST

Twenty-five year old Oliver Brown is addicted. Two years ago, he was at the height of his career as “Nicky Starr,” fashion model, porn actor, partier without peer. Then came the accident. Hiding his scars, both emotional and physical, he’s gone into hiding. But fine clothing is some solace. A new suit by Debussy? Better even than a ride on his motorcycle Hulk or all the things he used to give and take on camera.

Enter Leslie Scott, the flamboyant, dark-haired, heel-and-tiny-short-wearing twink sent to deliver Oliver’s newest fix. A firecracker, Leslie is dapper, generous, in touch with his feminine side but all man, and as gorgeous as any garment ever made. He makes Oliver dream of ending his reclusion, of recapturing a future forever denied him. But for that to happen, Leslie would have to strip him to the bone. Only then will they rebuild life from the bottom up.

Read an Excerpt:

The first ‘date’ although neither of them wants to call it such yet…

Oliver sat at his usual table at Fidalgo’s, his fingers nervously tapping the red-chequered table top. His stomach was in knots and he’d barely slept last night. He’d even thought of crying off today and telling Leslie that something had come up and he wouldn’t make it. However, the thought of Katie—who’d highly approved of the coffee plan—bitching at him for not going was worse than the alternative.

And he really did want to see Leslie again. He’d thought of nothing more from their last phone call. It would be good to talk someone who was so bright and bubbly and, he admitted to himself, sex on a stick. Although that wasn’t what he wanted from this, he reminded himself. He needed a friend, not a lover. And besides, he doubted Leslie would be interested in him that way. He probably had a string of undamaged goods at his beck and call.

For God’s sake, stop analysing everything and get on with it.

Despite that thought, his cock throbbed in his black jeans when he saw Leslie enter the coffee shop. The man looked like he had just stepped out of a fashion magazine. Dressed in tight black chinos, finished with high-heeled black boots, with a white collared shirt and a leather jacket, wearing the biggest pair of sunglasses Oliver had ever seen, Leslie looked mouth-wateringly tempting. His jet black hair was styled artfully over his face, one strand of hair falling down, making Oliver want to brush it away. He took Oliver’s breath away.

Down boy, he cautioned himself. Keep it simple. Just friends, remember?

Alberto, the owner, approached Leslie and gestured, then his coffee date looked over to where Oliver sat and the most beautiful smile flooded his face.

Oh dear God, Oliver thought desperately. I am in so much fucking trouble.

MEN OF LONDON SERIES PREVIOUS BOOKS

One of London’s up-and-coming chefs, Eddie Tripp has just the right recipe to drive tragedy from the mind of Gideon Kent—and leave him senseless with desire.

THE MEN OF LONDON

From Soho to Norwich, there’s no escaping love.

A TASTE OF FOREVER

An award-winning chef with his own restaurant and an inexhaustible passion, Gideon Kent once had everything. Then came tragedy. It stole more than Gideon’s home. He hasn’t cooked since.

Until Eddie Tripp. Fun-loving and vivacious, the Norfolk redhead’s a real up-and-comer in Gideon’s kitchen—and other places. Slim where Gideon’s broad, easy-going where Gideon is growly, he and Gideon seem polar opposites, and yet Eddie conjures flavors that would tempt anyone with a taste for perfection. The sauce of love is already simmering, and this pair is about to dine on the most delicious dish they’ve ever prepared. Because Eddie’s been Gideon’s missing ingredient all along.

The murder of a shared friend leads a high-profile investigator and a psychic into a mystery involving lies, blackmail, BDSM—and into each other’s arms.

THE MEN OF LONDON

From Charing Cross to Waterloo, there’s no escaping love.

SEEING THROUGH…

28-year-old Draven Samuels has a tragic past, but as an investigator with a high-profile London company he now gets what he wants. Tough, sarcastic, and sceptical, he has no patience for lies and even less for people who waste his time. Even if they’re as beautiful as the wild and dark-haired Taylor Abelard. Especially when they’re talking over the body of a murder victim.

THE DARKNESS

Psychic Taylor Abelard is used to people calling him a freak. He can see past events and feel the ghostly vibrations of people close to him who’ve passed on. It’s why he doesn’t get too close to the living. But this time, against his better judgment, despite Draven’s mocking rejoinders, Taylor will get closer than ever before. The mystery of a dead friend will lead the two men down a dark and seedy trail of blackmail and lies. Add in the heartbreak of a family tragedy, and events lead them straight into each other’s arms. By the end of this night, all their demons will have risen—and been banished with the dawn.

Susan Mac Nicol is a self confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, self confessed geek and nerd and in love with her Smartphone. This little treasure is called ‘the boyfriend’ by her long suffering husband, who says if it vibrated, there’d be no need for him. Susan hasn’t had the heart to tell him there’s an app for that…

She is never happier than when sitting in the confines of her living room/study/on a cold station platform scribbling down words and making two men fall in love. She is a romantic at heart and believes that everything happens (for the most part) for a reason. She likes to think of herself as a ‘half full’ kinda gal, although sometimes that philosophy is sorely tested.

Lover of walks in the forest, theatre productions, dabbling her toes in the cold North Sea and the vibrant city of London where you can experience all four seasons in a day , she is a hater of pantomime (so please don’t tar and feather her), duplicitous people, bigotry and self righteous idiots.

In an ideal world, Susan Mac Nicol would be Queen of England and banish all the bad people to the Never Never Lands of Wherever -Who Cares. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good
people.

Number of pages: 300

Book Description:

Brigid Roan is a graduate student at the University of Texas. She had no trouble getting her thesis approved, but finding a Hill Country motorcycle club willing to give her access to their lifestyle had started to seem impossible. Then she got a lead. A friend of a friend had a cousin with ties to The Sons of Sanctuary.

What she wanted was information to prove a proposition. What she didn’t want was to fall for one of the members of the club. Especially since she had set out to prove that motorcycle clubs are organized according to the same structure as primitive tribal society.

Brash Fornight was standing in line at the H.E.B. Market when his world tipped on its axis. While waiting his turn to check out, his gaze had wandered to the magazine display and settled on the new issue of “NOW”. The image on the cover, although GQ’d up in an insanely urbane way, was… him.

After reading the article, Brash threw some stuff in a duffle and left his club, The Sons of Sanctuary, with a vague explanation about needing a couple of days away. He left his Jeep at the Austin airport and caught a plane for New York, on a mission to find the guy who was walking around with his face.

Read an Excerpt:

“Sir?” Brash Fornight gradually became aware that someone behind him in the grocery checkout line was trying to get his attention. “Sir?” He refocused and glanced behind him. The woman leaning on a cart overflowing with chip bags and cookie boxes nodded toward the cashier indicating that it was his turn to move forward. Brash looked her in the eye and had to give her props. Most people wouldn’t have the balls to try to herd a guy wearing Sons of Sanctuary MC leather.
The club employed a woman who cooked and did grocery shopping several times a week as part of her job description, but Brash didn’t like to explain his relentless craving for peanuts and he liked being teased about it even less. He didn’t know whether it was the Vitamin B or the fat or just because he liked the taste, but he couldn’t imagine going a day without them.
That’s how he came to be standing statue still In the grocery checkout line, being prompted by some woman with more nerve than sense. While he was waiting, his eyes drifted over the magazine display and settled on the cover of “NOW”, on the Most Eligible Bachelor edition no less. The debonair figure staring back was wearing Brash’s own face and body. He looked different with short hair and a four thousand dollar suit with the shirt fashionably open at the neckline, but the similarity was inescapable.
On impulse he grabbed the magazine and tossed it onto the conveyor belt with his week’s stash of peanuts.
He stuffed the bags into the saddlebags of his bike and roared toward home, nervously tapping his fingers on handlebars at red lights, riding on shoulders to keep from slowing down. He was anxious to get to the privacy of his own room and read about Branach St. Germaine.
Two beers, one jar of peanuts, and one “NOW” article later, Brash was sitting on the edge of his bed looking at the wall, seeing nothing but his own heavy thoughts. He pulled out his phone, looked up a website, and waited on hold for ten minutes to hear the time of the next flight from Austin to New York.

There was a flight to Newark in a little over three hours. He looked at his watch and calculated the time it would take to drive from Dripping Springs at that time of day. As he booked the flight, he stood up, walked to the small closet, grabbed a duffel bag, and began shoving stuff into it. Ten minutes later, he closed his door and locked it, threw the duffel over his shoulder, and headed straight for the office downstairs. He dropped the duffel on the hallway floor beside the closed door and knocked.
“Yeah?” Brash looked inside, glad that his dad was by himself, and stepped in. “What’s up?”
“I’m takin’ personal time, Pop. Gonna be gone for a couple of days.”
“What the hell is ‘personal time’?”
The gruffness made Brash smile. “It means I’m not gonna be here if you call and I’m not tellin’ you why.”
The Sons of Sanctuary President looked up at Brash, over the top of his readers, and narrowed his eyes. “You got a secret?”
“Everybody’s got secrets.”
Brandon Fornight studied his son for a minute. “True enough. Is it the kind of secret that could affect this club?”
Brash shook his head. “Don’t see how.”
“Well, then. See you… When did you say you’d be back?”
“I didn’t.”
“Bein’ purposefully vague, are you?”
Brash grinned. “That’s why they call it personal time. But I expect to be back Friday.”
“You gonna have your phone with you?” When Brash nodded, Bran looked back down at his ledger in a deliberately dismissive gesture. “Well, get outta here then.”
Brash parked his bike in the airplane hangar. The structure had already been on the property when the club had bought it and turned it into a compound twenty years earlier. They used part of it for vehicle maintenance and repair and part for parking.
Some of the guys who were working looked over and shot curious glances his way when Brash threw his duffel into his pickup and started it up, but it wasn’t their way to ask questions. The Sons figured that if somebody wanted you to know something, they’d tell you.
Brash took a cab to a midtown hotel, wondering all the way why human beings would choose to live in such a place. As he slid his credit card across the hotel counter to the agent on duty, he glanced at the name, Brandon Fornight. It seemed unlikely that it was a coincidence that that the mysterious look-alike’s first name began with the same four letters. He ordered room service and pulled out his laptop.
Getting intel on the guy didn’t take advanced ops. Within an hour Brash knew where Brannach St. Germaine worked, what kind of car he drove, what kind of women he dated, who his tailor was, and where he liked to dine. There was no shortage of photos online, but the one that grabbed his attention wasn’t one of the many with starlets or debutantes on his arm. It was the one taken with his arm around his mother as they were arriving together for some red carpet fundraiser. Brash had an almost irresistible compulsion to reach up and touch her face on the screen in front of him.
The knock on the door signaled that room service had arrived. It cost a fortune, but looked and tasted like shit. So he closed the computer and went out for a walk to clear his head and find something edible.

‘I want you.’ The gold went from his eyes. They glowed like wet amber. Wild, ancient, and powerful. Suddenly, as if it was too much to resist, his hand reached out and grabbed a handful of hair from the back of my head. My mouth went dry. I swayed toward him. I could smell him. Soap.Alcohol.At this time of the afternoon? And something else. The smells of his day?Impossible to tell.Intriguing nevertheless. The other hand, rough with urgency, curled around my waist. Hot, solid and possessive. His lips traveled downwards. It must have been only a second but it seemed to take ages. Breathlessly I waited for his lips to find mine. I felt him inhale before our lips touched. And then all hell broke loose and I lost all sense of time or place. The brutal warmth of his mouth was incredible. All that was cold and lost inside me went up in flames like kindling on a dry night. I laced my fingers through the lushness of his thick hair and moaned. His tongue was fire. Irresistible.A madness that swept along my lower lip. When he bit the edge of my bottom lip hard enough for me to gasp with a mixture of pain and pleasure, his tongue snaked into my open mouth, muscular, cocky, and tasting indescribably delicious. A rush of heat flared between my legs. I stood on tiptoes like a child reaching for a treat on a high shelf, and sucked the hot and silky flesh like it was toffee. I could have sucked him forever. The greed that flashed inside me was as shocking as the impatience that poured out of me.

I was starving for him.

Sapphyria's Review:

Nathan and his best friend, James, take jobs at a new rail yard hoping to escape their homes and build their lives the way they want - without the interference of parents. Both acclimate to their surroundings and attempt to make friends with those that share their sleeping quarters. Nathan didn't expect to meet the man of his dreams - the man he didn't even know he was looking for. Alex stirs up emotions that are alien to Nathan but yet, comfortable at the same time. The only problem is that what Alex and Nathan feel for one another is not something that can be shown out in the open. Painful memories from Nathan's childhood threaten to tear them apart, as the relationship between Alex and Nathan intensifies; yet they manage to figure things out.

Just as Nathan and Alex are preparing for a life of forever, everything shatters.

Forbidden by Matthew Freake is a profound telling of true love in the face of adversity. Things were quite different in our world in the 1950's regarding who could love whom in terms of gender and race. Anything out of what the general populace thought was "normal" was despised and considered illegal, and violence was the way of the land - all you have to do is search the internet and you'll find prime examples of the horrific behaviors committed against people who were deemed "different" by others.  We've made leaps and bounds in society today but still have a long way to go.

The only real issue I had with Forbidden is that Nathan's feelings were more vibrant than Alex's throughout the entire story. The unequal level almost gave their romance a one-sided feel. Even now, I'm still not sure that Alex loved Nathan as much as Nathan loved him.  I truly felt Nathan's love but Alex seemed distant - maybe it's because of the time in history - Alex forced himself to be cool and aloof to avoid "suspicion."  This didn't detract from the story, it's just something that I noticed as I was reading along.

Forbidden reads more like a diary than a story. which is a different from anything else I've read. The way that Matthew wrote the story gives it a realistic and believable quality that is so important to me. I felt the uncertainty, the joy, the pain, and ultimately, the devastation.
