ARC Review: Rebecca's Lost Journals, Volume II: The Contract by Lisa Renee Jones

In the second sultry e-short of excerpts from Rebecca’s Lost Journals, Rebecca is faced with a contract to be a submissive that she doesn’t want to sign—and her would-be Master has unusual methods of convincing her…

Sunday, March 7th, 2012

For months I’ve had dreams and nightmares about how perfectly he personifies the word. Sleep-laden, alternate realities where I can vividly smell his musky male scent, feel his hard body against mine. Taste the sweet and sensuous flavor of him-–like milk chocolate with its silky demand that I indulge in one more bite. And another. So good I’d forgotten there’s a price for overindulgence. And there is a price. There is always a price. I was reminded of this life lesson on Saturday night. And I know now, no matter what he says, no matter what he does, I cannot--will not--see him again.
It started out as any other erotic adventure with him. Unpredictable. Exciting. I barely remember where it all went wrong. How it took such a dark turn.
He’d ordered me to undress and sit on the mattress, against the headboard, my legs spread wide for his viewing. Naked before him, open to him, I was vulnerable and quivering with need. Never in my life had I taken orders from a man; most certainly I had never thought I would quiver with anything. But I did for him.
If Saturday night proved anything, it was that once I was with him, under his spell, he could demand anything of me, and I’d comply. He could push me to the edge, to unbelievable places I’d never thought I would go. Exactly why I can’t see him again. He makes me feel possessed, and what is so disconcerting about this feeling is that I like it. I can hardly wrap my mind around allowing such a thing, though I burn for it. But when I saw him standing at the end of the bed Saturday night, all broad and thick with sinewy muscle, his cock jutting forward, there was nothing but that need.
He was magnificent. Really, truly the most gorgeous man I’ve ever known. Instant lust exploded inside me. I wanted to feel him close to me, to feel him touch me. To touch him. But I know now not to touch him without his permission. And I know not to beg him to let me.
I’ve learned my lesson from past encounters. He enjoys the vulnerability of a plea far too much. Enjoys withholding his pleasures, until I am nearly quaking with the burn of my body. Until I am liquid heat and tears. He likes that power over me. He likes full control. I should hate him. Sometimes, I think I love him.
It was the blindfold that should have warned me I was headed toward a place of no return. Thinking back, I believe it did. He tossed it on the bed, a dare, and instantly a shiver chased a path up and down my spine. The idea of not being able to see what was happening to me should have aroused me-–it did arouse me. But for reasons I didn’t understand at the time, it also frightened me. I was scared and I hesitated.
This did not please him. He told me so, in that deep, rich, baritone voice that makes me quiver uncontrollably. The need to please him had been so compelling. I put on the blindfold.
I was rewarded by the shift of the mattress. He was coming to me. Soon, I knew I would come, too. His hands slid possessively up my calves, over my thighs. And damn him, stopped just before my place of need.
What came next was a shadowy whirlwind of sensation. He pulled me onto my back, flat against the mattress. I knew satisfaction was seconds away. Soon he would enter me. Soon I would have what I needed. But to my distress, he moved away.
It was then that I was sure I’d heard the click of a lock. It jolted me to a sitting position, and I called out his name, fearful he was leaving. Certain that I’d done something wrong. Then relieved when his hand flattened on my stomach. I’d imagined the sound of the lock. I must have. But I couldn’t shake the subtle shift in the air then, the raw lust and menace consuming the room that didn’t feel like him. It was a thought easily forgotten when he settled heavy between my thighs, his strong hands lifting my arms over my head, his breath warm on my neck--his body heavy, perfect.
Somehow, a silk tie wrapped around my wrists and my arms were tied to the bed frame. It never occurred to me that he could not have done this on his own. That he was on top of me, unable to manipulate my arms. But then, he was manipulating my body, my mind, and I was his willing victim.
He lifted his body from mine, and I whimpered, unable to reach for him. Again silence. And the whisk of fabric. More strange sounds. Long seconds ticked by, and I remember the chill that snaked across my skin. The feeling of dread that had balled in my stomach.
And then, the moment I know I will die remembering. The moment when the steel of a blade touched my lips. The moment that he promised there was pleasure in pain. The moment when the blade traveled along my skin with the proof he would be true to his words. And I knew then that I had been wrong. He was not dangerous. Nor was he chocolate. He was lethal, a drug, and I feared…

Saph's Review:

ARC Review: "Rebecca's Lost Journals, Volume 1: The Seduction" (Inside Out Novella, #1) by Lisa Renee Jones can be found here:

"Rebecca's Lost Journals, Volume II: The Contract" is the second novella in a 4 part series related to the full length Inside Out Trilogy.

As like Volume 1, this novella is written in true journal entry style; with month, day, and year designators. Rebecca has been offered a contract by her would-be master.  I seriously thought it was Mark when I read Rebecca's Lost Journals, Volume I: The Seduction but I re-read both Volumes again and our Ms. Lisa Renee Jones is a very, very sneaky author.  She does an excellent job introducing all of her male characters into the story and alluding to the fact that each and every one of them could be the Master.

In Volume II, Rebecca mulls over the contract - the contents of it and what it would mean to fully submit to the demands therein.  How much of her own life, independence, and freedom will she lose?  Is she willing to share - or be shared?  If she declines the Dom/Sub lifestyle, will she be able to keep her mystery man in her life?  So many questions and yet it comes down to one yes-or-no answer.

This is another well-written novella that brings us no further to knowing the identity of Rebecca's pursuer.  Well played Lisa! Well played indeed!

Jonas Stone has been given his first independent operation: rescue the insurrection leader’s imprisoned grandson from the Mission. Getting the job done means more than getting Danny Granger out-it means staying with him while he heals. Staying too close, for way too long.

He’s kept his secrets for years, hid behind a mask no one could see through...until now. Danny isn’t the kind of man Jonas deserves. But he might be exactly the man he needs...

Saph's ARC Review:

The DARK MISSION series so far….

The streets of New Seattle have become a battleground between the Holy Order's agents and the witches persecuted in the name of "keeping of the peace". Battle-lines are shifting, good and evil not nearly so clear-cut as witches and rogue hunters have banded together in an uncertain alliance with rebels determined to peel back layers of conspiracy that go back decades before the cataclysm that changed the world forever. The Order has made its move, overthrowing the city government in a bloody coup, and present-viewer Jessie, ex-hunter Silas, newly minted witch Naomi, the felon Phin Clarke, seer Caleb and genetically enhanced witch Juliet are suddenly thrown together with the displaced Mission Director Parker Adams and Simon, a double-agent whose witch genes are slowly killing him. The rebels need to gain some ground, get back their imprisoned people, or this will be the shortest rebellion in history.

This is my first M/M review. I'll be honest, I wasn't really sure it would be my cup of tea going in. I'm glad I stepped outside my comfort zone and took a chance.  I wasn't really sure what to expect but what I read was not it.  Instead of being uncomfortable reading about Jonas and Danny, I was enthralled.

The Catholic Church and the government have teamed up to capture all witches in the area to enslave and use.   There is a rebellion underway to take down this horrible organization and rescue all of the prisoners.  When Jonas Stone is recruited by May, the leader of the rebellion, to rescue her captured grandson, Danny Granger, he figures its going to be all in a day's work.  Little did he know that watching the "kid" as he's tortured and abused would cause such stirring feelings and huge reaction from within.  Jonas has always done what's been needed to comfort a rescue during the missing - flirt with a woman, etc. - but he didn't realize that flirting with an known man would feel so....right.  This isn't his first encounter with a man but he doesn't usually get attached or stick around for long in a relationship.  Danny, he feels, could be different.

Wicked Lies has proved to be a super novella.  The strength of Jonas (due to past injuries) and of Danny (due to current injuries) is admirable.  They each have stories and secrets.  Their interactions are tender at times and I found both characters to be very likable.  Their romance isn't overly graphic or pushed down your throat.  The author does a great job with this novella and provides good dialogue, good descriptive scenes, and a good plot.

Please note that this book contains a 2-male relationship.  If you aren't sure about it (and aren't willing to step outside your comfort zone), or are against these types of relationships on moral grounds or whatever, please don't purchase this book.  If you can be objective, keep an open mind, and read the book for what it is, and not let the sexual preferences of the characters distort your views, then please, purchase this book.

Chapter One

A blue-white light flickered in the dark. Sparks glinted off the tool racks bolted to the wall across the shadowed room, reflected from the metal braces left leaning against the desk. As silence—mind-numbingly loud, thick as water, and twice as hard to breathe—filled the narrow room, that blue-white light caught in the circular lenses of a pair of glasses and threw a glare across the screen.

Jonas Stone stirred. “It has to be now,” he said, his voice too loud in the oppressive weight of the shadows behind him. He couldn’t look away from the feed spilling its incandescent glow over his desk, his keyboard.

His conscience.

Because the man framed in that digital feed—the kid strapped to the chair dead center of the surveillance footage—wasn’t the first suspected heretic to sit there. To sweat there.

To bleed.

“Be sure, Jonas. We get one shot at this.”

His brain wanted to look at the comm unit beside his left hand. His body refused to obey, every cell focused on the prisoner’s dark, drooping head. Scarred fingers twitched, knuckles whitening, and Jonas frowned as he realized his right hand had closed into a painful fist.

It had to be now. The kid wouldn’t last much longer.

“There’s no alternative,” he replied. “We’re not going to get another opening soon enough to .” He hesitated.

The voice over the comm link didn’t waver. Not even a fracture. “Soon enough to save him.”

Only through recent experience did Jonas know that the raspy, lifetime-pack-a-day voice coming out of the secure line belonged to a woman named May. Leader of a rebellion that had saved Jonas’s life, and the perpetrator behind a string of hacking jobs that left Jonas seriously reconsidering a career shift before the Church had made that choice for him.

The fact that she was very, very good was all that kept him from throwing in the towel now.

But he’d never met her in person. Hell, he’d never met the prisoner now struggling to raise his head in Jonas’s feed, either. Instead, all he had was a picture in a box, a hacked security feed, and too many hours spent staring at the incandescent screen until his eyeballs throbbed and the vicious curl of helplessness inside him turned to a spiraling ache.

That boy didn’t belong in that kind of interrogation room.

A single light, faded blue, gleamed over shoulders broader than Jonas’s, but not by much. The prisoner was athletically lean where Jonas was simply skinny. The narrowly defined muscles of his chest were outlined by the stained remains of a thin, long-sleeve shirt. Blood and sweat had turned it nearly brown. His slumped shoulders strained against the restraints confining him to the hard metal chair, a position not just awkward but painful as hell. Jonas hadn’t seen his face for over an hour.

He didn’t have to. He knew what he’d see when—if—the kid raised his chin again.

Blood caked into a ridged scab across the fine slash of his upper lip, under his broad nose and over a determinedly sculpted chin. He’d see the blackened stains of it dried into the man’s ears, blending into his dark brown hair. Even now, that greasy fringe flopped over his forehead, long since sweating off the gel that had held it into its fashionable spikes. The longest of the textured strands would slide into one swollen eye, if it ever opened again.

The prisoner had eyes the color of the computer-lit confines of the places Jonas preferred to inhabit. Almost black, even without pain stripping them to an endless void. When open, those eyes all but crackled with an intensity that could take a lesser man’s objectivity away in a single glance. Like a hungry kid or a kicked puppy.

Or a man on the edge of desperation.

Jonas’s chest kicked.

“Let me know when your people are ready.” He didn’t bother hiding the raw regret in his voice. He’d felt a lot of it, lately. After all, he used to be the man who helped put people into rooms just like that.

“Fine.” May’s voice cracked. Flattened. “I’m trusting you, Jonas.”

“I know.” They always did. “Let me try. I’m positive I can get him out. They won’t expect it this soon.”

Excerpt from The Chosen by Theresa Meyers

He’d briefly toyed with the idea of putting the iron shifter restraining cuff back on her, but thought better of it. Doing so only would have broken the fragile sense of trust beginning to build between them. And he did have to admit, she’d been both a mountain lion and a hellhound and hadn’t ripped him apart either time. That had to count for something.
“Is your mount suitable, Miss McGee?”
She turned for a moment and looked at him. “You know you ain’t got to be all stiff and formal with me; you might as well call me China.”
An unwanted wash of something hot and acidic roiled in his gut. “Colt called you China.”
She huffed. “Well, it’s my name, dammit. What else was he supposed to call me?”
He raised a brow. “I take it by your tone that you are no longer enamored of my brother.”
“If that means I ain’t after him no more, then you got it right.”
Interesting. And dangerous. For both of them. “And why is that?”
“Colt made it plain he don’t have no more use for me. He’s got that red-headed tramp Darkin of his now to help him find the piece of the Book he’s hunting.”
Remington resisted the urge to chuckle. Clearly China was feeling scorned, and his amusement would only add to her humiliation and pain. Neither of which he wanted to do. He needed her to be focused.
He needed to be focused.
He’d long ago determined the best course of action with a woman who was heart hurt was to reassure her of her desirability. Wait. The horse slowed, sensing his hesitation. What the hell did he think he was doing? And when had he started thinking of China as a woman rather than a Darkin? He shook his head to clear it. She was Darkin, and a powerful one at that. He’d do best to remember it before something dreadful happened. He shouldn’t be worrying about her emotional state, and he’d damn well get his own under firm control.
“Something wrong?”
Remington swiveled his gaze to her. The hot evening desert wind caught her hair, sending it into a swirl of blond satin ribbons behind her head as she rode beside him. Her sun-kissed skin gave her a healthy glow and made the gray in her eyes turn at times a silvery sage green color. He realized with a start the point he’d been duped into thinking of her as female—the moment he’d seen her in the cell, dirt, grime, and all. She’d been too angelic looking to be something damned and vicious as he’d been raised to believe all Darkin were.
“Why you lookin’ at me like that?” Her words came out velvet soft, very nearly a purr.
“Why you lookin’ at me like I’m the last swig of water in the canteen? All needy-like.”
He gave her a tilting half smile, nothing serious, nothing too comic, so she’d believe he made light of the situation. “A man can’t enjoy a beautiful view?”
A delightful pink color suffused her cheeks. “Is that all? ’Cause I could’ve sworn you looked like you had thoughts running through your head.”
Remington knew better than to bait her, but he could hardly help himself. Letting anyone get the last word just wasn’t in his nature. He liked to win. “What kind of thoughts?”
“Thoughts like you were wondering what exactly happened between me and Colt.”
Remington frowned. “Frankly that’s the last thing I’d like to discuss.”
China snorted. “Hit a sore spot?”
Remington centered himself, shoving down the boil of emotion until he was calm, cool, and collected. “What happened between the two of you is immaterial to our mission. I need you, and you need me to locate and obtain the Book. Simple. Easy. Neat and clean. End of story.”
She snorted again and muttered under her breath. “Ain’t nothin’ that simple and easy.”
Saph's Review:

You may read my reviews of Book 1 and 2 by following these links:

The Hunter, Book 1

The Slayer, Book 2

Steampunk + Old West = A Wild and Steamy Ride.

Once upon a time, in Arizona Territory sometime in 1883, there were 3 brothers; Colt, Winchester, and Remington. They were known as Hunters.

Book Three in the Legend Chronicles series focuses on Remington Jackson and his part in the quest to retrieve sections of the Book of Legend.  He is a part-time lawyer, part-time Hunter, and all sorts of sexy.

This final installment of the The Legend Chronicles brings together Remington (the middle brother) and China  McGee as unlikely partners in the quest to locate his assigned section of the Book of Legend.  All three books in the series are fantastically woven together.  They happen almost simultaneously and the overlapping  of scenes continues:

(Here is part of my review from Book Two):
Book Two actually overlaps certain sections of Book One.  We see parts of Book One that were originally told from the points-of-view of both Colt and Lilly, rewritten in Book Two and told from the points-of-view of Winchester and his vampire companion Alexandra.

China is a very intriguing character.  She is the former partner of Colt, Remington's younger brother.  Again, as in the first two installments, we have a Hunter partnered up with what is supposed to be the being that they hunt ~ The Darkin!  China is a shape shifter who gets tossed into jail after Colt sets her up....this is discussed in Book One!  China is also harboring a secret (as did the other two heroines in The Hunter and The Slayer) and hers is a doozy.  She must stick close to Remy and make sure she's around for the reuniting of the Book of Legend.  But, of course there is an attraction that makes things a bit difficult.

The adventure in this book takes Remy and China to the Mayan Ruins in their quest to find the third piece of the Book.  The novel goes way beyond just searching for the last piece of the Book however; it is also the novel that brings all three brothers back together to reunite the book, closing the doors to Nyx and preventing Rathe from taking over the world.

I love the adventure mixed with steampunk-type elements.  We get a satisfying trilogy, sexy heroes, fun heroines, and lots of steamy scenes.  I won't spoil the ending....make sure you pick up all three won't be disappointed!!

As I noted in the Book One and Book Two reviews:

This novel has a great combination of Steampunk, Romance, Adventure, and Paranormal elements.
