Press Release: "Poster Girl" by Joni McPherron (Sartoris Literary Group)

Poster Girl
By Joni McPherron

Sartoris Literary Group
Pub date: February 1, 2013

About Poster Girl:

From all appearances, it looks like CJ Jones is living a near-perfect life. After all, she has the letters “M.D.” behind her name, “Chief, Emergency Services” embroidered on her white coat, a beautiful home on the water—not to mention a fabulous vintage poster collection, her favorite of which announces that “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.”

CJ’s life is good—great, even—until she wakes up as a patient in her own ER. And if that isn’t bad enough, she’s under the care of the Chief of the Medical staff, Dr. Dan Brown, the hottest surgeon in town. But the insult to CJ’s injuries is that Dan’s hands are getting awfully close to parts she would rather keep private.

Granted, this isn’t the first encounter CJ’s had with Dan. When the two met previously, Dan made it clear that he was interested—and CJ had made it equally clear that she was not, rendering this doctor-doctor turned doctor-patient relationship a little awkward from the get-go.

But when Dan takes it upon himself to look after CJ—going so far as to even move in to her home to “keep an eye on her”—things become really complicated. After all, in Dan’s mind, ministering to CJ’s every need means anticipating her every need, her every desire, her every wish, her every fantasy….

Despite the fact that she thinks she doesn’t need, or even want, a man, CJ soon finds that Dan isn’t just in her bed, but he’s in her heart, and her mind…and everywhere in between. But this blissful state is shattered when Dan is forced to suspend CJ from her post at the hospital—a devastating double blow when CJ comes to suspect that Dan may have screwed her in more ways than one. But she’s not sticking around to find out…

Will a new locale, a new job, and a new life be just what the doctor ordered? Or will a surprise visit from the past rekindle the fiery, heated struggle between love and lust? CJ Jones may not need a man, but want? Want is another story…

Ilona sighed. "Terek, I don't seem to be like any of your other vampires."

She was right.

"I have thousands of vampires, Ilona. You've just seen the ones who live here."

"Are they all women?"

Shaking his head, he laughed. "No. Not all of them. Does that matter?"

He saw it did matter by the way her bottom lip quivered ever so slightly. "Ilona, what's wrong?"

She closed her eyes and turned away so he couldn't see her face. "I've never been like this. I don't know what's wrong with me. I barely know you and my head tells me I have every reason to hate you. I know this. But I'm consumed by jealousy at the thought of you with these women and thousands I haven't even met."

Terek stared silently at her, unsure of what to say. It was perfectly natural she would be attracted to him. Vampires were sensual beings, and the pull of a sire to a vampire was common. Everything she was experiencing was exactly as it should be.

Before he could tell her this, she turned toward him. "I don't want to feel this way toward someone who doesn't feel anything for me."

The shame in her voice bothered him. Why did she think he felt nothing for her?

"I care about you as I care for all my vampires."

That wasn't exactly the truth. In fact, he cared much more for her after only such a short time.

"Chattel. Or worse, as a plaything. Somehow you've made me care for you, and I'm simply the latest addition to your collection."

"Ilona, you're not a plaything or part of a collection. I didn't choose to sire you. You were dying because of another vampire's choice and begged me to save you."

"Even worse then. I'm a mistake you're saddled with."

Terek winced at the pain of her words. Mistake. She believed she was unwanted and unloved. She had no idea the effect she had on him and how much he struggled against the growing feelings for her inside him.

He let his desire control him and leaned toward her, taking her in his arms. A need to feel her mouth yielding to his overtook him, and he kissed her hard, needing her to understand how much he wanted her.

But she didn't yield. Instead, she met his desire with her own, snaking her tongue past his lips to tease the tip of his tongue. Such a common act he'd experienced countless times before with women now excited him more than he could believe, and his cock sprang to life, pressing hard against his hipbone.

She tasted like some exotic fruit Jasmine seldom found at the market—a treat he rarely got to enjoy but relished so much more when he could. She clung to him by the neck as she pressed her body to his, leaving him in no doubt as to what she wanted.

He wanted it too.

"Ilona..." He stopped, unsure what he'd wanted to say as she slid her hand down the front of his pants.

Looking at him, her eyes wide, she said, "No, don't say anything. I need this. I don't want to think about who you are with the others. Even if you have to pretend, then pretend. Just let me have something about being a vampire that brings me happiness."

Her hand felt like silk as she slid it up and down his stiff cock, grazing the tip just enough to make his hips come up off the bed. His mind was nowhere else but right there with her.

Groaning his desire for more, he tugged a fistful of hair, pulling her head so she looked into his eyes. "No pretending."

"Ouch." A thin stream of red oozed up from her mud-covered fingers. Whatever that thing was, it had scratched her palm. She stared at the surrounding puddle. Where had it gone? There, beside her right foot. Alexis leaned over for a closer look.

It couldn't be.

Several voices called down to her. She ignored them, and tugged the muddy piece free. Blowing away several strands of hair blocking her view, she swished the item around in the rainwater and managed to clean off most of the dirt.

Small, white and with a distinctive shape, it resembled a bone. More like several tiny bones barely connected by stiff mud. And oh, God… It looked like…a finger!

Ice settled into her spine. She held a finger.

A tiny finger.

A child's finger, still wearing a toy ring.

Her fingers tightened around the bones. Her insides warred to keep the precious item safe while another part of her wanted to throw it far away from her.

Then something changed.

Dizziness and nausea fought for supremacy as her vision blurred. Disoriented, she wavered as the ditch before her suddenly lengthened and narrowed, morphing into an interior hallway.

Alexis froze, her horrified gaze locked on the changing scene.

Dear God, what was going on? Her mind raced to sort out the change. How had the dirt bank turned to gray paint? And the sewer smell smothered by heavy cooking odors? Fried chicken?

Where was she?

Alexis stared down the hallway. A young child, caught inside this peculiar scenario, stumbled toward her with both hands clasped over her ears. Tears streamed down her young face, and her t-shirt was inches above the dirty shorts. Bruises decorated her lower legs, and well…dirt covered the rest of her. As if she'd recently been playing in a dirt pile. Alexis tried to run to her, to hug her tight, to protect her…only to find she couldn't move. Her feet were paralyzed in place. Terror filled her heart.

She opened her mouth to scream. No sound came out.

Run. The scream seared through her mind.

Dimly in the background, loud crashes and yelling could be heard, as if someone gave chase. Fear of retribution accentuated every step the distraught child took. The sound and tone distorted.

Alexis shuddered. Tears clogged her throat and pain choked her heart.

"Alexis. Alex? Alex!"

Scott's alarmed voice pulled at her from outside the vision that held her transfixed. Caught between two realities, Alexis jerked toward Scott, the object dropping from her fingers.

Instantly, the hallway disappeared.

It was if a vacuum sucked the dirt walls back into place, with a rush so powerful it forced Alexis to lean forward. Then as if caught in a giant rubber band, the force suddenly released, to throw her into reverse. She flew backwards and landed, once again, on her butt in the middle of the large puddle.

Her gut screamed and bile tried to escape her throat. She shuddered. What the hell had just happened? She swallowed convulsively, willing her breakfast to stay down. Tremors started at her toes and rattled up her spine.

"Alexis, damn it. Answer me!" Scott demanded.

"I – I'm fine." Was that croaking her voice? The finger... Where was it? More than a little daunted by the prospect of touching it again, she remained seated and eyed the surrounding mud.

It rested on the muddy surface…waiting for her.

Eerie. She hated to touch it again, the last experience too horrific to repeat. She reached for it, but her fingers shook so badly she stopped. Yet, she couldn't force herself to leave it behind. Compromising, she pulled a tissue from her pocket and gingerly picked it up.

The size bothered her. The vague image of the running child from a few moments ago slammed back. Ruthlessly, she pushed the vision out of her mind. She couldn't even begin to analyze what had happened. It had been way too weird. Alexis focused on what was important right this moment. Where there was a finger…

She studied the high expanse of dirt wall. She dimly remembered digging her fingers into the bank on her downward tumble. But how high up had that been? The ditch stood eight to ten feet deep.

"Here's the ladder, Alexis," Scott said as Mike, another coworker arrived with the ladder. Scott held the long metal structure several feet off to the side.

"No!" she motioned. "Please, bring it over here. Where I fell in."

Scott shrugged and the two moved the ladder to the right spot.

Alexis struggled to position it the best she could near her original flight path. Once the ladder was secured, she moved upward, one rung at a time. At each new level, she stopped and searched. The bone had to have come from somewhere.

"Oh, for the love of God. Alexis, what are you doing?" Scott peered over the ladder at her.

Alexis didn't answer. What could she say? Three, maybe four feet from the top, a speck of white caught her eye. Reaching between the ladder rungs, she gently brushed some of the dirt away. Another bone, possibly another finger. Vomit lined her throat. She rested her forehead against the steel frame of the ladder for a long moment.

"Scott?" Her hands squeezed the ladder tight. She kept her voice low.

"Yes, beautiful. What's going on?" He crouched down for a better look, but he was at the wrong angle.

"Are there any police close by?" She cleared her throat, tears suddenly clogging her throat. Willing him to not ask her any questions. "If not, go get one – now."

Startled, Scott stared at her for a brief moment before disappearing from sight, his heavy footsteps fading rapidly. Mike held the ladder steady. Alexis rested her head against a rung, and waited with her arm wrapped around one side of the ladder. The steel dug into her forehead as she realized something important.

This wasn't just a ditch. This was a grave.

5.0 out of 5 stars--BEST of the Psychic Visions Books

“I've been a fan of this series ever since I read Tuesday's Child. The whole concept of psychics who work alongside police and rescuers and use their talents to tap into victims and killers really grabbed me. Because of their psychic abilities, these people are special and yet are often outsiders to society, trying to fit in. This is #4 (I think) in the series, and it's the best so far. with one, platonic with the other--no menages in this book!) and endearing. If you've read the earlier books, you'll remember Stefan and he's more central in this story. I rate it as a Must Read.”--Amy Atwell "Getting To The Heart of the Story"

5.0 out of 5 stars--Fantastic!!

“Wow! Dale Mayer has done it again. I've read this whole series and it is exceptional. This is the fourth book in the series (I hope there will be many more) and I think it's the best one yet. I love a book that pulls you in and this one definitely does that. Be prepared to read it from cover to cover in one sitting. A definite MUST read.”--BizzyBee

Saph's Review:

"Rebecca's Lost Journals, Volume 1: The Seduction" is the first novella in a 4 part series related to the full length Inside Out Trilogy.

This novella is written in true journal entry style; with month, day, and year designators.  The timeline spans from Saturday, December 4, 2010 through Wednesday, February 16, 2011.  In this brief time period, Rebecca realizes that her life long dream to work in a high end art gallery could possibly become a reality - all because of a chance encounter.  Here is a quote from December 4, 2010, the first entry into the journal:

"Have you ever met someone who you immediately knew could change your life?  I've heard about this happening, but I never experienced anything near it until tonight.  Tonight I met him.  I don't know this man's name, nor does he know mine, but I still feel the impact of our brief meeting deep inside" (L.R. Jones, 2013, pg. 1).

What a powerful event in Rebecca's life.  Very few can say that a brief encounter awakens something inside; something that allows obsession over the encounter to build, with the ultimate result playing out just as they had hoped.  Rebecca plays her cards right (almost--she almost blew her chance at an internship at her dream gallery) and finds herself exactly where she'd always hoped to be - surrounded by artwork and artists.

What she doesn't expect is the very strong, extremely intense feelings she has for her boss, Mark Compton.  He reels her in, hook-line-sinker, and when he has her full time in the gallery, his focus changes.  As the journal entries progress, Rebecca is introduced to the Master/Submissive lifestyle.

This is a short, internal look into the seduction of Rebecca Mason.  The novella indicates how 3 months in Rebecca's life change completely.  It brings her into a world that she knows nothing about, a lifestyle that she's never considered, and feelings she's never experienced.

"Rebecca's Lost Journals, Volume 1" is a very intense short story that grabs the reader and pulls them into the pages.  Characters from the "Inside Out Trilogy" are put on display and put out for show.  Meet them, greet them, get to know them....and then make sure you purchase "If I Were You."

This is a very well written novella.  We only get a sneak peek into Rebecca's world but it's enough to pull you in and keep you completely engaged.  The tension created between Rebecca and Mark, and then their eventual relationship is believable.  The dialogue between all of the characters is very natural and smooth flowing.  We are introduced to other key players and given brief glimpses of their interactions with not only Rebecca but also Mark.

I am completely hooked on this series by Lisa Renee Jones and will be reading the rest of the journals as they become available, as well as, the Inside Out Trilogy.

Reviews for Book 1 & 2 can be found by clicking on the following links:

Book 1:  Blind Her With Bliss

Book 2:  Deceive Her With Desire

"Cheat Her With Charm" is the final installment of the Tilling Passion series and does not disappoint.  Book 3 focuses on Meghan Tilling and her fiancĂ©, Peter.  When Peter's job takes him on frequent out-of-town business trips, Meghan, and her entire family, begin questioning his long absences.  Sure that she's being cheated on, Meghan's sister, Deirdre makes her opinions quite known.  Trying hard to resist the allowance of that seed to be planted and fester within, Meghan goes about business as usual.

Peter, meanwhile, is being deceitful, and bringing potential validation to Deirdre's claim of unfaithfulness.  He's been lurking around dominatrix websites and has found himself smack dab in the middle of a hotel party featuring the dominatrix he's been communicating with, Miss Crystal.  Peter does find himself feeling pretty uncomfortable in his surroundings and gives up meeting Miss Crystal face to face.  After returning home, terrible things start happening to Meghan, and Miss Crystal keeps making her presence in the their small-knit community know.  In the process of finding what Peter thought was missing from his life, he brought danger to his family.

During the tragedies facing Meghan, the Tilling patriarch suffers from several heart attacks that land him in the hospital.  The cause behind these life-threatening medical issues will give you chills.  The revelation will divulge a threat to the Tilling family.

The gradual introduction of S&M in this novel is done very well.  The main characters are divided on the issue at first but once it's presented, Meghan and Peter are able to progress to a level of complete trust.  This allows their relationship, sexual and non-sexual, to open up to a whole new level.

Make sure you read this book carefully - there's a twist coming that changes the entire game.  Everything you think you know and have figured out at the beginning may, or may not, be correct.

All three books in the series are fantastic and are highly recommended.

Saph's Review:

Story location:  Maine

When Julie Tilling loses her best friend, Jason McCarthy, she questions his death.  The rumors circulating about Jason's lifestyle, and then death by his own hand, don't sit well with her.  This wasn't the Jason she knew and loved.  And she was determined to find out the truth...

...Even if it takes into a seedy club owned by Elvis, and acquaintance of Jason's.

Demon Jones is drawn to the sexy vixen in the club as soon as she finds her way to the dance floor.  When he finds her trying to get past security into the private part of Elvis' club, he discovers that she isn't at all who she says she is, or seems to be.   Then again...Demon Jones isn't exactly who he is, or seems to be.  But Damon Corey doesn't have the same ring as Demon Jones.

Demon has the pick of the women at the club - and he takes advantage of it but after a while soon tires of the game.  Wishing he could end the cycle and settle down, he comes face-to-face with the beauty that captures his full attention.  Jewel has met her match in Demon.  Just looking at him turns her from uptight, "always do the right thing," Julie Tilling, into a seductress who just can't help herself.

Believing that their steamy encounter in the club is a one-night-stand, Julie goes back to her normal, low-key life, and Damon goes back to being Demon.  Except neither one can get the other out of their mind.

In the meantime, Elvis gives Julie a small box of momentos in hopes that she can glean something from them that will help figure out #1) if Jason killed himself and why; or #2) if Jason was murdered, what was the reason behind it and, of course, who did it.

"Blind Her With Bliss" combines a sexy romance with a suspenseful mystery, and for the most part, pulls off both genres pretty seamlessly.  This is a short novella but in that length manages to introduce, develop, and pull together intense sexual moments, sweet romantic touches, and figure out what really happened to Jason McCarthy.  Both Demon/Damon and Jewel/Julie are fantastic protagonists that work pretty well together, especially since they really haven't know each other long at any point in the novella.  The secondary characters bring out sides in both Damon and Julie that help develop their personalities and tell the readers exactly who they are.

And the ending contains a plot twist that was somewhat of a shock.  Everything in the story comes full circle and was satisfactory.  The author's writing is clear and consistent and the dialogue is easy to follow and understand.  The emotional parts of the book will easily evoke feelings within the reader.

Very nice start to a new series.

Mark picked up his cup of coffee. “Have you thought about the two wishes you have remaining?”

“Not really. I’ve been a bit preoccupied.” She tossed a piece of melon into her mouth.

James carved a portion from his pancakes. “Do you have any idea at all what you want?”

She shook her head while she chewed. After she’d swallowed, she wiped her mouth with a napkin. “No. I mean, I have some ideas but I don’t think they will work out. I need to take care of some things first before considering what to wish for.”

“What kind of ideas do you have?” Mark set his coffee on the table.

“Mark, let her be.”

“I was trying to help.” He piled pancakes on her plate, then on his.

She grabbed the syrup. “Are you in a hurry or under any kind of deadline—?”

“No,” they both blurted out at the same time, making her chuckle.

“Take as much time as you need,” James said.

“We spend most of our time in a bottle. Even in spirit form, it’s snug. We highly value freedom, so please, take all the time you need. We’re not going anywhere.”

“Unless you want us to,” James said. “If you need privacy, just tell us to go home and we will. When you need us back, just call our names.”

Val inhaled a deep breath while she poured the syrup onto Mark’s plate. “I appreciate the information and everything you’ve done so far. The cooking, cleaning, and…” She paused and moved the bottle above her stack of pancakes. “Okay, the wonderful sex, too, has been beyond satisfying. You’re welcome to stay in my home, as long as I have one.”

Both men stared at her as they held their forks. “Just wonderful?” Mark asked.

She chuckled as she set the bottle on the table. “Amazing. Spectacular.”

“Earth shattering?” Mark grinned. “You wish you could feel such pleasure every night?”

“Mark!” James snapped.

James met her gaze. “Don’t answer that. He’s leading you.”

Val sat quietly. While the idea of having sex with both of them every night sure seemed like a damn good idea, she considered the consequences. A sore body would not help her get up and go to work. Achy legs might cause her to fall, or, at the very least, encourage her not want to move from the bed or sofa. Lastly, she didn’t want to force them to do anything against their will. Maybe they’d enjoyed the night as much as she had, but requiring them to repeat their actions nightly seemed a little like slavery. The power to live and think freely was a blessing.

Mark turned to her. “I meant no harm.”

“It’s a nice thought, but not one I’d wish for. Sorry. I hope that doesn’t disappoint you.”

“Not at all. Right, Mark?”

She shifted her attention from James to the dark-haired genie.

He reached over, placed his hand over hers and gently squeezed it. “If you change your mind, I assure you we are up to the task.”

Solenne sat with her head in her hands at the kitchen table, her bruised arms the evidence of her sacrifice. Saint lightly ran his finger over the purple mark where he suspected the Archon had brutally misused her and cringed in anger at the look of pain he saw in her eyes when she looked up at him.

A growl escaped from his lips and his fangs slammed down into his mouth. "Who did this?"

Pushing past him, she shook her head. "Don't. If this is what I have to endure to keep you safe and help the Sons defeat those bastards, then I do it willingly."

"Tell me who did this, Solenne. I owe him."

She spun around to face him, and the pained sound in her voice made him hate himself. "Why? So you can make everything I've done meaningless? So you can get yourself killed?"

Before he could answer, she was gone, but he'd seen the tears in her eyes. Anger mixed with the need to protect her, churning his gut into knots until he had to see her.

He had to let her know what she'd done wasn't meaningless.

Her door was open, and she stood with her back to him. Already out of her clothes, she wore only a tank top and boy shorts that clung to every perfect curve on her body. His cock stiffened as his eyes took in the sight of her gorgeous legs. Long and lean, they were the kind of legs a man loved wrapped around him as he slid in and out of her wet cunt.

"Solenne," he said almost in a whisper to not startle her, but it didn't work. She spun around with her arms covering her full breasts that strained against the thin fabric of her tank top, but she couldn't cover the bruises along her collarbone and across her shoulders.

Obviously inflicted that night, their redness had begun to fade to a deep purple where fingers had pressed roughly into her tender skin. Solenne saw the look of shock he didn't try to hide from his eyes and scrambled to grab a shirt from the back of a nearby chair.

"What is this?"

"Nothing. Just leave it be."

Saint took the shirt from her hand and threw it on the bed. "No." Dipping his head, he softly pressed his lips to the darkest bruise on her left shoulder. Fucking Archon!

Gingerly, he ran his fingers over her skin, gently touching each bruise before raising his head to look at her. "Solenne, I promise you here and now I'm going to kill the one who did this. I'll drain him drop by drop until he begs for the release a stake will bring."

Eyes wide with tears looked up at him, their blue color pale and watery. "Saint, don't touch me like this if you don't mean it."

He meant it. He'd meant it in every dream he'd had of finally returning to her. Taking her face in his hands, he kissed her long and deep, drinking in the delicious taste of the lips he'd missed for so long.

God, he'd yearned to once again feel the touch of her skin next to his! Year upon year of lonely nights interrupted only by pale replacements ebbed from his memory now as his hands once again learned of the woman he'd always loved.

Solenne molded to him, setting his senses ablaze. His body craved to join with her, to finally reclaim that piece of his heart lost so painfully nearly a century ago. He slid his hands under her shirt to her breasts and worshipped them—their fullness in his palms, their deep pink tips pebbled from desire that begged for his mouth's attention.

Taking her hand, he led her to the shower. "Don't move." A quick twist of the faucet handle and warm water streamed down from the showerhead.

"Do I look like I need a shower?" she asked in a teasing tone as he slipped the tank top over her head.

Saint looked down at her sexy mouth as he slid his thumbs under the waist of her shorts. "Always fighting me."

Crouching in front of her, he slid the shorts down her legs and off her feet. Eye level with her pussy, he looked up and licked his lips. "I hope you don't plan on fighting me now."

He didn't wait for a reply before he drew his finger up her wet slit. Solenne's eyebrows knitted and she bit her lip. Her eyes slowly closed and tiny moans filled his ears.

"Don't close your eyes. Watch me."

That night I couldn't sleep. And it wasn't just because I was sleeping on the couch in Jimmy's living room. I couldn't slow down my mind. It felt like a live electric wire ran along my spine. I got up, threw my blanket to the floor, and scrounged around in the kitchen until I found a bottle of whiskey. I filled a glass and headed out to the balcony.

A huge moon lit up the water with a bright, white stripe. I sipped at the whiskey, enjoying the sting with the sweet. The door creaked behind me and Dan stepped to my side. "Couldn't sleep?" he asked.

"Restless, I guess. You?"

He shrugged. "I'm a night owl."

"Whiskey?" I asked, offering my glass.

He took it and sipped then handed the drink back. A breeze blew rustling the palm trees and raising goosebumps on my flesh. "You cold?" Dan asked. He moved closer to me so that our hips touched. Placing his arm around me, he squeezed. Dan leaned over and kissed the top of my head. I rested against his chest and listened to his heartbeat. It picked up pace when I slipped my arm around his waist.

"What is it about you and balconies?" he asked. I looked up at him. Dan's eyes glowed in the harsh moonlight. "That makes you so damn irresistible."

He ran his thumb against my cheek, smiling down at me. I blushed and felt his touch like a burning coal against my skin, rough and hot. Dan leaned down and kissed me on the lips, gently, almost chastely. He moved down to my neck, opening his mouth and kissing me deeply. I looked out at the ocean's vastness and felt grounded by the kisses Dan was laying on me.

His hands ran up and down my back, using their strength to pull me closer to him. My dress strap slipped off my shoulder exposing my breast. Dan took the whiskey glass out of my hand and finished it looking at me in the moonlight. I felt my nipples hardening under his gaze. Dan placed the empty glass on the balcony railing then leaned over and kissed my breast, softly, slowly. I shuddered with pleasure. Dropping to his knees, Dan took my dress with him. It fell to the balcony floor without protest.

I ran my fingers through his hair and then pulled him back to his feet. I fumbled at his T-shirt and pulled it over his head. Dan's skin felt soft and silky against mine. His chest was lean and sculpted.

Dan unbuttoned his jeans and they dropped to the balcony floor next to my dress. Urgent now, Dan kissed me like if we stopped something disastrous would happen. I wrapped a leg around him and he followed my cue picking me up off the ground. Both my legs wrapped around him, Dan turned and leaned me against the building.

He caught my eyes as he breathed heavily, our noses almost touching, his fingers hooked into the waistband of my panties. He tried to say something but I stopped him, pressing my lips against his. Dan didn't try to ask for permission again.

Saph's Review:

Being that "Kiss of the Betrayer" is Book #2 in this series, I highly recommend you read Book #1, "Shield of Fire" first.  There is a lot of back story concerning Luc, Jade, Ravyn, and Rhys, as well as Vile and Icarus, that is very important to know before heading down this leg of the journey.

"Kiss of the Betrayer" focuses on Luc and Jade but we also have a lot of involvement from Ravyn, Rhys, Vile, and Icarus, among others.

Luc has a huge secret....a secret that has continued to scar him emotionally for many years; he caused the death of woman he loved.  We discover just exactly what happened and why she lost her life, but the twist the author included is brilliant.  He has lived a life of carefree bachelorhood committing to no one; his lifestyle the result of the grief he's held pent up for over a decade.

Jade also has a huge secret....and while it involves the vengeful murder of Luc, it isn't what you think.  She's harboring a secret that could put her in league with the Bane.  After becoming involved with Ravyn (non-sexually) in Book 1, and getting to know Rhys and Luc, Jade isn't quite sure she's up to the task of murdering Luc.  When his secret is revealed, Jade's has no choice but to reveal itself, too.

Will the secrets they keep and a past that they share keep Jade and Luc on the good side of evil or will everything they have be destroyed?

I kept my plot description short for a reason.....there are just too many things that could be given away.  I don't want to spoil this novel for anyone.

Speaking of plot - Ms. Brux does a fantastic job of weaving the multiple story lines (yet all together connected at some point) and keeping everything and everyone properly focused.  The twists, turns, and revelations are well written and not completely obvious as to what their respective outcomes may be.  The scenes are well described without being overly drawn out and we get the right amount of information needed at that time.

The characters, as in the first book, are well developed - some for the first time in this book, and others are a continuation from Book 1.  We finally get to see inside Jade and Luc's heads and discover what seems to be plaguing them both.  The emotional levels are written in such a way that you are able to feel what the characters feel, for me at least but I'm really receptive to that type of writing.  My husband keeps telling me I'm overly emotional...which, I suppose, I am.

Luc is the handsome, noble, caring hero - even going so far as to provide a woman of the night some money without the exchange of sexual favors so that she could make sure her children are properly fed.  He's a womanizer but we don't see too much of that as it's mostly just alluded to.  He's also very strong and protective.

Jade is very much the independent heroine.  She's lived a lonely life and has managed to stay strong and survive.  Her independent nature, and the past that they share, makes it very hard for Jade to accept any type of help from Luc.  When she's suddenly thrust into the war brewing between the Bringers and the Bane, she discovers that she's going to need all of the help she can get.

This is a very exciting series that keeps you engaged, albeit sometimes on the edge of your seat!!

About the Author:

As a multi-published and an award winning author, Boone's writing drips with experiences from real life. Addicted to anything that might make a good story, she weaves tales that range from dark fantasy to humorous romance. Settled in the icy regions of Alaska with the love of her life and twin daughters, it's not uncommon to find her tapping away on her iPad on a windy beach or the barren tundra. Be warned, anyone and every even is fodder for one of Boone's novels.
