Saph's Review:

Being that "Kiss of the Betrayer" is Book #2 in this series, I highly recommend you read Book #1, "Shield of Fire" first.  There is a lot of back story concerning Luc, Jade, Ravyn, and Rhys, as well as Vile and Icarus, that is very important to know before heading down this leg of the journey.

"Kiss of the Betrayer" focuses on Luc and Jade but we also have a lot of involvement from Ravyn, Rhys, Vile, and Icarus, among others.

Luc has a huge secret....a secret that has continued to scar him emotionally for many years; he caused the death of woman he loved.  We discover just exactly what happened and why she lost her life, but the twist the author included is brilliant.  He has lived a life of carefree bachelorhood committing to no one; his lifestyle the result of the grief he's held pent up for over a decade.

Jade also has a huge secret....and while it involves the vengeful murder of Luc, it isn't what you think.  She's harboring a secret that could put her in league with the Bane.  After becoming involved with Ravyn (non-sexually) in Book 1, and getting to know Rhys and Luc, Jade isn't quite sure she's up to the task of murdering Luc.  When his secret is revealed, Jade's has no choice but to reveal itself, too.

Will the secrets they keep and a past that they share keep Jade and Luc on the good side of evil or will everything they have be destroyed?

I kept my plot description short for a reason.....there are just too many things that could be given away.  I don't want to spoil this novel for anyone.

Speaking of plot - Ms. Brux does a fantastic job of weaving the multiple story lines (yet all together connected at some point) and keeping everything and everyone properly focused.  The twists, turns, and revelations are well written and not completely obvious as to what their respective outcomes may be.  The scenes are well described without being overly drawn out and we get the right amount of information needed at that time.

The characters, as in the first book, are well developed - some for the first time in this book, and others are a continuation from Book 1.  We finally get to see inside Jade and Luc's heads and discover what seems to be plaguing them both.  The emotional levels are written in such a way that you are able to feel what the characters feel, for me at least but I'm really receptive to that type of writing.  My husband keeps telling me I'm overly emotional...which, I suppose, I am.

Luc is the handsome, noble, caring hero - even going so far as to provide a woman of the night some money without the exchange of sexual favors so that she could make sure her children are properly fed.  He's a womanizer but we don't see too much of that as it's mostly just alluded to.  He's also very strong and protective.

Jade is very much the independent heroine.  She's lived a lonely life and has managed to stay strong and survive.  Her independent nature, and the past that they share, makes it very hard for Jade to accept any type of help from Luc.  When she's suddenly thrust into the war brewing between the Bringers and the Bane, she discovers that she's going to need all of the help she can get.

This is a very exciting series that keeps you engaged, albeit sometimes on the edge of your seat!!

Shield of Fire (Bringer and the Bane, Book 1)

Saph's Review:

Ravyn is a young woman in her early teens that has been forced to live in old abbey since being left there.  The Sisters claim that the gifts that Rayvn possesses are actually a curse and she grows up believing this.  That is, she believes it until she has to defend herself against the creepy Brother Powell.  Thinking she killed him, she flees into the outside world; a world very foreign to her, so she won't have to face the wrath and punishment of the Sisters.  After she steps over the line between sacred land and the mundane, she's attacked by the Demon King's second-in-command, Icarus.

Rhys Blackwell had an intuition crop up as he passed by the old abbey, which draws him to the area.  When he feels the prickles on his skin, he looks up to see Icarus, demon henchman, clenching a young woman in his talons; a woman shooting flames that only the Bringers can do.  Is this why he was drawn to this area?  Did the abbey harbor another Bringer?  And why is Icarus, the Demon King's second, trying to carry her away?

What ensues is a tale of nobility, protection, revelation, and, of course, the head demon who wants to control the world.

Having been raised in an abbey her entire life, Ravyn knows nothing about her heritage, including who her parents were, or why she can summon fire.  When the noble warrior with dark hair saves her from imminent death in the clutches of a demon, the questions she harbors move closer to the surface.  Rhys realizes that Ravyn is not a normal human but isn't sure her lack of knowledge is truly that or if she's hiding secrets.  Ultimately, they pair up to help prevent the destruction headed by the Demon Bane as Vile, the Demon King, attempts to infiltrate the Shadow World and bring forth their Army of Souls.

"Shield of Fire" is also contains romantic elements.  As Ryhs and Ravyn are driven to stop the Demon Bane, they find themselves drawn to one another.  Her naivety is lost (almost too quickly) as Rayvn clings to her "shield" Rhys.  Rhys bounces back and forth between what his duty is - to protect Rayvn - and what his heart and body desires - Rayvn.  These scenes have some intense sexual moments but the author included a great sense of intimacy and emotional connection.

All of the secondary characters have...well...Character.  There seems to more to many of them than meets they eye, including some of the evil characters.

I wasn't actually sure I was going to like the book.  I had a hard time getting into it at first and I'm not sure why exactly.  After Rhys rescued Rayvn and they moved onto the inn, I found myself a little more interested in the story.  The book only gets better as you move through it.  I really enjoyed this novel.

Please Note:  This Novel Contains Adult Scenes!

I will be reviewing the next book in the series, "Kiss of the Betrayer," tomorrow.

VBT: Guest Post - "One Plus One" by Kay Dee Royal (Presented by Bewitching Book Tours)

Please welcome Kay Dee Royal to Saph's Steamy Reviews today!!!

Before I get started with my guest post, I’d like to thank Sapphyria (lovely name, btw) for having me here today…and also I’d like to thank everyone stopping in to visit…let me introduce myself - I’m Kay Dee Royal, an erotic romance author who writes what I love, paranormal, fantasy, and contemporary erotic romance. I’m here today with a guest post relative to One Plus One, my latest contemporary erotic romance.

I’ll definitely be curious to hear your thoughts on this subject…

Are You In the Mood for Sex?

Wow, what the??? Yeah, I know, but it got your attention, right? *grins*

Okay, so why the question…it’s all about the mood you’re in when you read super-charged sizzling erotic romance and the many different sub-genre choices.

I love reading erotic romance, any sub-genre of it, but there are times when I have to be in a certain mood for some of them in order to fully enjoy it.

Paranormal, such as shifters, ghosts, psychic stuff, witches, vamps, I can read pretty much anytime. Same for Contemporary, Historical, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Urban Fantasy - you get the picture.

But what about the addition of BDSM (bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, sadism, masochism), or M/M (male with male), F/F (female with female), or M/F/M (ménage with two males and one female or two females and one male or three same sex), or group sex – including sex toys, voyeurism, anal play, oral sex, or any position sex? Whew!

For me, it’s usually a sleepless night that calls me to read something different…more or less something I’ve not personally experienced but would vicariously. I’m curious and love to create with that in mind, and I love to read with that in mind also.

It can be a real turn on, or it can be a ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’ – I’d have to try it to believe it. (LOL) My mood has to be in an open-mind frame (in other words, my mind isn’t turning over lists of things to do tomorrow), my curiosity is high, and I’m willing to explore the possibilities through story-stars and an author’s expertise in writing the story.

What can I say…sometimes I’ve had too long of a day, I’m worn out and reading something challenging for me just isn’t in the cards…but, I would definitely turn to something curiously hot, different from my norm, and find joy and pleasure in exploring it ;)

So, what is your mood for reading sexually explicit stories? Do you have a certain frame of mind when you read a BDSM? Is curiosity part of your draw to open the pages?

Kay Dee

Thank you so much for joining us today!!!!  I'm actually a newbie to BDSM novels....just getting me feet wet.

Lacinda and Blade discover more than sexual ecstasy on a lust-filled singles cruise.
Winners can’t be losers.

One Plus One Blurb ~

Coerced by her friend, Lacinda, a woman crushed by love, winds up on a three-week singles cruise.

Blade, a man of means, discovers Miss Right under the guise of a singles cruise set up by his business partner.

Once Blade focuses his efforts he always gets what he’s after, until Lacinda throws his arrogant reputation back in his face.

Can Blade break through Lacinda’s angry barriers? Will she ever see him as anything more than a player?

One Plus One Excerpt ~

“Lacinda Gainesly,” a steward called her name. She saw the sign he held with her name printed in bright purple. She slipped on the first step leading down onto the ship and stumbled past the steward. The sign dropped from his fingers and his arms latched around her body from behind. His quick reflexes saved her face from biting the deck, but his hands cupped both of her breasts and squeezed. Lacinda threw her elbow back into his side.

“Hey, a little respect for the guy who saved your life.”

Lacinda shrugged out of his grasp. She met his gaze and realized this was the same man who picked her up from her hotel in a long black limo, only then he was dressed in black instead of the white uniform he now wore.

“You’re the driver.”

“I’m a lot of things, like possibly a hero.” His eyes looked as happy as his lips.

She noticed his smile, the same he shared earlier when he asked her questions about why she took the cruise quiz. Lacinda thought he was simply a driver for the cruise company so she shared some of her story. He knew about Alex dying in a car crash on the way to their wedding. She searched her memory for anything else she might have shared which could embarrass her later.

“Alas fair maiden, your chambers await your timely arrival,” he said, faking a British accent. He held his gloved hand out. Lacinda refused it.

“I’m ready for my quarters.” She needed relaxation, maybe take a nice hot scented bath and get prepared for the swing of things, anything to distract her from the past that never left her alone.

“As you wish, my lady,” he said, again with a British accent. The steward turned, led her across the deck, and down a stairway. She saw men and women following other stewards or each other. Once on board everyone began mingling, even flirting, judging by the tinkling female laughter and deep manly chuckles.

“There will be an announcement left under your door regarding tonight’s dinner seating arrangements. May you enjoy your day and make sure you take time for a relaxing massage. There’s always a masseuse available. Their extension is listed beside your phone. You’ll find your room key there as well.”

Lacinda followed him down a narrow hallway until he stopped in front of a door with an elegantly scrolled number 216.

“This is you. May I answer any questions before I go?”

Lacinda dug in her purse for a tip. Clueless on how much was appropriate and not wanting to give him anything. He got his gratuity when he copped a feel of her breasts.

Saph's Review:

Riley Poe is a grown-up former wild child that teetered on the edge of darkness her entire teenage years. She cleaned up her act, went to college, and has become a kick ass tattoo artist in Savannah, Georgia. The sole caretaker of her younger brother, Seth since the death of their mother, has assisted in her maturing. After she catches him playing in the graveyard with some of his friends, she follows them to the crypt named "da hell stone" by the resident members of the Gullah. What happens down in the crypt changes Riley, Seth, and all of his friends, as the boys accidentally release the confined spirits of two very powerful, extremely dangerous vampires. Good or bad, the events that transpire cause the lives of everyone involved to be in constant turmoil and upheaval. Things that go bump in the night become a reality; one that Riley has to embrace if she wants to save her brother, his friends, and all of Savannah.

The release of the two vampiric spirits of Valerian and Victorian result in her neighbor and guardian, The Preacher, disclosing secrets to Riley; Secrets that involve her and the Gullah, and revelations concerning downtown Savannah's resident vampires, the children of the Afterlight. The resulting game plan, as laid out by Preacher and the head of the vampire clan, Gilles, involves Riley being protected by a hot and broody vampire named Eli, while she attempts to infiltrate the underground drug scene to find her brother and anyone involved in Valerian and Victorian's plot. Finding and destroying Victorian and Valerian is the only way to save Seth so Riley agrees. But will they get to the vampire brothers in time to save anyone and will she be able to hold on to heart when Eli is so close to her all of the time?

This is a great first book in the Dark Ink Chronicles. While vampires aren't a new subject by any means, I really enjoyed Ms. Jasper's take on them in Savannah. Riley is a strong, fiercely independent woman, forced to take over the parental reins when her mother is found dead. Running her own business and rearing a younger brother isn't an easy task. She does have a wonderful relationship with Seth until the incident in the crypt. He then becomes a moody, sulky, dark teenager that is the complete opposite of her Seth. She vows to do anything and everything she can to save him and bring him home where he belongs. Although, even as strong as she is, Riley is no match for Eli.

Eli really is a great hero to Riley's heroine (if you can get past what I put below in the "Problems" section. He saves her when necessary, protects her at all costs, and he and his family train her to be able to protect herself. He spends a good portion of the novel trying to stay away from Riley in anything more than a professional way but he eventually is forced to acknowledge his attraction to her and when he does--be prepared for some sex.

I found it to be overly descriptive in some parts but I really didn't mind.  I've already ordered Book's 2 & 3 and can't wait to read them.

Problems -

One issue I had with Riley was the constant reminders of how crappy her life was growing up and how bad she was as a teenager. After the first five times, I think most readers can stand up and stay "We get it - You're life was fucked up!" No need to remind us every other page.
The issue I had with Eli dealt with behavior. He is somewhat aggressive towards Riley at times, which caused me to frown. Consistently being slammed up against walls isn't my idea of a good time.
There were many similarities to Twilight that I had to overlook but the one that made me groan and roll my eyes the most actually occurred in the PREFACE: Riley's inner monologue is explaining a few things about the Afterlight and her past etc. and when she admits the existence of vampires, the very last line of her conversation is this: "And I was utterly, irrevocably in love with one." Now, I understand that the word "irrevocably" is not a Twilight creation, however, it's very much identified as being spoken by Bella in Book 1. The similarity of a human stating this about a vampire is just all to familiar.

Don't let these little tidbits deter you from reading the book, though.

The book, as a whole, was fast and an enjoyable read.

Saph's Review:

"A Time for Everything" is one of the best novellas that I've had the pleasure of reading.

When the heiress to a whiskey fortune has had enough deceit from the man she's dating, Siobhan (Sam) takes off for a walk in the foothills of Scotland.  After hours of walking in the rain she comes across a kilted man she assumes is a reenactor.  She soon learns, however, that her little trip in the highlands magically transported her back to 1790 Scotland.

The romance between the kilted man, Angus, and Sam is beautifully written.  Even with the short length of the book, Ms. Gimpel was able to unite Angus and Sam, develop their characters, and create the story and plot without feeling like everything was rushed.  There was a sense of completeness and rightness in the novel.  The descriptions of Sam's surroundings were fantastic and gives the story a sense of reality that some time travel books lack.

Ryelee loved it when his voice got low and throaty. Slowly, she did as he asked. She took her top off, leaving her heavy breasts encased in her bra. She shimmied out of her jeans next, enjoying the looks of appreciation from her husband.

Clint walked over and guided her in front of the full-length mirror. He undid her bra and slowly let it fall to the ground. He cupped her breasts in his large hands and lightly squeezed them. His eyes met hers in the mirror, and she could see his desire. Her nipples tightened as she moaned. Clint took each between his fingers and pulled on them lightly. He gave her a wicked smile and pulled her panties down. He guided her out of them. They both stood there staring at her body in the mirror.

Ryelee felt as though she’d fall if she hadn’t been leaning back against Clint. He made her feel beautiful with his wondrous stare. He caressed her taut stomach next. She couldn’t take her eyes off their reflections. It was so sexy, so naughty. His hands reached lower until they found the very place he sought. He cupped her with one hand while holding her up with the other. His fingers probed her, and she felt as though her whole body was somehow electrified.

Ryelee sagged against him. He quickly turned her and grabbed her tight ass.

“Kathleen Ball pulled at my heartstrings once again. In her typical way, this author crafted a story that touched every one of my emotions and pulled me so far into her story that I felt I was part of it.

My heart ached for pregnant Ryelee as she tried to move past her heartbreaking upbringing and make a life for herself. Her relationship with little Rheenie was heartwarming, and her love for Clint was tender. And though at times my stomach hurt for the way Ryelee was treated, I knew Ms. Ball would give us a romantic hero we could be proud of.

This reader has become a lifelong fan of Kathleen Ball and her wonderful stories, and I cannot wait for more.”-- ClassDreamer'84 - 5 Star

Consummate Therapy Series Omnibus Release Day! Authored by Katie Salidas and Willsin Rowe

The excitement is everywhere, from Las Vegas to Brisbane! In fact, it’s probably right in the middle of those two places that the excitement is greatest! So, depending on which direction you go, that’s either in southern Central African Republic, or about 1,000 miles south of Hawaii.

That’s right, the third “Consummate Therapy” book releases in almost no time, bringing the series to a climactic...uh, climax!

If you haven’t caught up with the trials and tribbing...sorry, tribulations...of Natasha Blakely, billionaire CEO, then now is the perfect time to get your fingers wet. Sorry, I meant “feet”. Get your feet wet.

Submission Therapy

When we first meet Natasha, she’s a hard-nosed control freak with unhealthy addictions to coffee, cigarettes, and pretty young men with prices on their...well, let’s say “heads”. When her therapist, Dr. Benson, recommends “Submission Therapy”, she is introduced to the notion of letting go, of releasing control. Master Sweet shows her the mental, physical and emotional benefits of simply submitting to the will of another.

Her journey continues through “Occupational Therapy”, where she learns a most intimate form of personal control. Her determination is strong but brittle, and though she’s had great success in her business life, she finds these personal challenges far more difficult. Simply because they require her to open up all the emotions and memories that she has suppressed or denied in order to compete in a man’s world. When this chapter ends, Natasha is faced with the most pivotal emotional choice she’s ever had to make.

Which brings us to “Immersion Therapy”. This story releases on Friday, November 30th in the US, and it brings out the best and worst of Natasha’s behavior. Her pride wars with her need. With the overload of sensation that Master Sweet has introduced her to, she flails against everything she once knew to be true. Yet she struggles to believe that a man who feels this good can have any kind of permanence in her life.

Katie and I hope you enjoy this series, and we welcome feedback and reviews.

Happy reading!

Submission Therapy Book 1

Master Sweet rested his hand back in my hair. “Natasha, it’s time to begin.”
He fisted that hand again, reigniting the heat in my scalp, while his other swept down my calf and stopped at my red-black two-toned peek-a-boo toe Louboutin pumps.
“What size do you wear, Natasha?” He drew the shoes off one at a time.
“Yet you have size eight feet.”
“Guys exaggerate their dicks, girls shrink their feet.”
He turned his already-tight fist, pulling a sharp breath into my lungs. “That kind of language is a privilege. One you’ve not earned.”
I couldn’t speak through the tension in my body, and I couldn’t nod without risking searing pain. Thankfully Master Sweet eased his grip just enough to allow my voice back.
“You will address me as Master Sweet, or simply Master.”
“Yes, simply Master.” I tensed up, ready for him to squeeze again. Instead he shocked me by pushing forward, overbalancing me until I was on hands and knees, my cheek buried in the carpet. His pelvis nudged up against my ass, and he was definitely packing something hard in there.
He took a long, deep breath in. “I do so enjoy these early stages.”
“Yes, Master,” said the toadying redhead.
He brought his free hand back down to my feet. He appeared to still be addressing his off-sider. “Look at the deep lines her shoes have carved. The rich redness of constriction.”
“Yes, Master.”
His breath seemed to falter for a moment. “It will be exquisite to see this all over her body.”
All over my body? What exactly was that supposed to mean? I should have known better. Never agree to a deal without the terms being spelled out in a contract. Business 101. “Listen, Mister Sweets. Unconventional sex therapy is one thing, but no one is putting any kind of marks on my body. Are we clear?” I threw his condescending words back at him.
“Do you understand what it means to submit?”
His callous tone caught me off guard, but I quickly recovered.
“I have underlings for that.”
“So you see submission as a form of weakness.”
“Absolutely. I bow to no one.”
“You do now. “ The finality of his words was chilling.

Immersion Therapy – Excerpt Book 3

He cuffed one hand, running his broad fingers up the inside of my forearm. “Normally I would use hemp rope, as before. Tonight...I don’t wish to lose momentum with you.”
That was as close as I’d ever heard to an admission of impatience from Him. Knowing what my body did to Him, understanding how much He wanted – needed – me, set my heart pounding with delight.
He cuffed my other hand and attached a lead to the chain linking them. Like before, He fed the rope lead though the eyelets on the bed frame. My arms were pulled forward tight as He secured the rope. I rested my head on the mattress, catching my breath as I awaited my beautiful punishment.
Master returned to me and picked up the paddle.
Involuntarily, I wiggled my ass, anticipating the first swat.
I felt his hand instead. He gently massaged each cheek. “Fifteen, Natasha. You will count them.” His hand sank lower to my aching clit. He gave a quick pinch and I squealed. “Understand?” He croaked.
“Yes, Master.”
The first swat landed square between my cheeks. The sting of it stole my voice, but it was the after effect that stole my breath. A swell of heat flushed my body. The balls felt as if they were bouncing around inside me, hitting every wall and nerve, like an erotic pinball machine. The sensation was overwhelming.
“One,” I whimpered helplessly, trying to hold back a yell.
The second swat bit into my left cheek. The familiarity of the feeling was like a warm blanket.
“Two,” I found my voice.
The third and fourth alternated between cheeks, but the fifth swat again found its home right in the middle. That was the sweet spot. A mixture of pain and unbelievable pleasure that, along with the rocking and rolling of those devilish little balls, threatened to ruin my control. I barked out the numbers, sounding more animal than human.
Master stopped, and again I felt his big hands on my ass. He squeezed and kneaded the tender skin. “You are magnificent, Natasha. I could get used to seeing the glow of this ass every day.”
“It is yours to spank, Master.”
He responded in kind, delivering another swat right to the sweet spot, sending pain and pleasure right to my needy mound.

Willsin Rowe falls in love with a scent, a playful expression or an act of casual intimacy more easily than with physical beauty. When confronted by any combination of those elements he is a lost cause. He has done many things over and over, done even more things only once, and half-done more things than he cares to admit. He loves to sing and doesn’t let his voice get in the way. He is intelligent but not sensible. He is passionate but fearful. He is not scruffy enough or stylish enough to be cool.
