VBT: Spotlight & Giveaway- "Malice Striker" (Viking Vengeance, Book #1) by Jianne Carlo (Presented by CBLS Promotions)

Blurb:

Can a mere Viking save the daughter of a goddess?

When Scotland’s King Kenneth orders his death and kidnaps his sister, the Viking Brökk—the Malice Striker—plans his vengeance: he’ll steal the king’s bastard daughter from Sumbarten Abbey and use her to buy his sister’s freedom. But his schemes go awry when his liege lord commands him to wed Skatha—and when he finds five women instead of one at the Abbey, none of whom will claim the King as father.

When the Viking abducts Skatha and her women, she’s bewildered. Why did Brökk seize her? Why does he want her for his wife? She weds him willingly enough when he threatens to kill her companions, but she vows to control her own destiny and escape. For if the Viking discovers her secrets, the laws of his people will force him to cast her aside…or kill her. And even Skatha, daughter of a goddess, might not escape the Viking’s wrath.

Book Description:

It’s good to be bad…

Patience Roberts is the last summoner standing between magiciankind and certain demon invasion. After banishing two or three demons a day for too long, gods know she’d like nothing better than a little down time with her number one distraction—Faust.
But with vampires, hunters and assassins lined up to take her out, who has the time? Still, she has to admit her resistance to the amorous faerie is wearing thin. Not that she’ll ever let on—after all, faeries are notorious for their short romantic attention spans.

Faust, a Shadowspawn faerie, watched as his outcast clan dwindled to nothing. Determined to hold on to the woman he loves, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect Patience. And one day build a life with her.

When an old demon enemy punches through the barrier between the worlds, Patience must draw on every ounce of her reputation as a cast-iron bitch to temporarily banish him. To get rid of him for good, she’ll have to sacrifice one too many pieces of her soul to leave room for love…

Warning: Contains a hero and heroine so hot they’re literally on fire, naughty faerie sex, post-coital cuteness, angsty magician drama, and yet more gratuitous violence against
vampires, demons, and innocent furniture.

Excerpt:

The elevator brought us up to the penthouse—of course, nothing but the best for the associates of Zachary Harrison. He was rich, famous, powerful, handsome and he gave me the creeps. Unlike Faust, he pinged my evil radar, which was why I kept our visits to a minimum even before he put a hit out on me.

I eyed the décor while Faust showed Harvey to the guest room. It was surprisingly bland and conservative for a faerie’s home, because they’re usually into bling and bold colors. The place was bigger than my condo, but I tied up a lot of my money in investments and savings instead of luxury. If I lived long enough to retire, I’d be a millionaire when I did. Judging by the size, I was willing to bet there was more than one guest room in a place this big, but I didn’t call Faust on it. Yet. It would depend on how our conversation went.

I went in search of the kitchen, and more importantly, of a cold beverage. A glass of wine would be nice, but I was just plain thirsty and I’d settle for anything. Food would also be helpful after my trip down the stairs. I opened the cabinets, looking for a water glass, but the shelves were empty. No food, no dishes. The fridge was empty too, but then again my fridge was pretty bare. I collected condiments, soda and expired take-out. Poor Harvey was very tired of me asking him to smell things to see if they’d gone bad.

“Here. Try this,” Faust said from behind me.

I turned and he offered me a plain white coffee mug of pink drink, the faerie version of a medicinal energy drink. It’d cure all my aches, pains, cuts and bruises—hell, it could probably bring me back from the dead.

“I’m not hurt that bad,” I protested.

“You need your strength.” He smiled, and I peered at him warily.

“Why, what do you have planned?”

His grin widened, and I walked away to sit on a stool next to the kitchen island. I sipped the drink and wondered what it tasted like. Delicious, probably. I missed delicious, it was a distant memory. Healing magic tingled from my lips to my toes and back in a prickly wave.

“You have history with this shadow demon?” Faust asked.

“Kris? We go way back, and I’m not his favorite person. Look, I know you’re wound up about Harrison’s hired killer, but this is worse. Kris is an ancient demon. He shouldn’t be able to get through to this world, and now that he’s here, I’m not sure I can send him back. It’s never happened before that I know of. I sure as hell don’t have a spell that’ll banish him.”

Faust tilted his head to the side and stroked his chin as though he had an invisible beard. Did faeries shave? Doubtful. “You need more information. You should speak with a chronicler.”

I smiled dryly over the rim of my mug. “A chronicler’s the reason I’m in trouble with Kris and your buddy Harrison. I’m pretty sure Simon St. Jerome sent the Titania my way to get her ritual, and we got it from Kris. I kicked his ass for it, and it must’ve been the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

“Ah. I see.”

“No, you really don’t. If I can banish Kris, and that’s a big if, I’ll have to finish the job in the shadow realm. I can’t let him go this time. He’ll keep coming at me until one of us is dead.”

“Didn’t you say that people try to kill you all the time?”

The corners of my mouth twitched, and I bit back my response. There’s a reason I haven’t killed Kris before now. Fighting him was within my ability, but killing an ancient demon takes a lot more power. I’d have to trade a piece of my soul to do it, and I didn’t have any more to spare. Summoners trade bits and pieces of our souls away for favors and power, like I’d foolishly traded my sense of taste to win over a boy. Every bit of soul lost is a bit of demon gained, hence my yellow eyes. I’d done enough bad things that I was on the verge of tipping from human to demon. An act like killing Kris would finish me, but I couldn’t tell Faust that, so I chose a different truth instead.

“I’m afraid of him. I’ve kicked his ass a dozen times, but I can’t kill him.”

His face sobered. “I’ll do it,” he offered.

I blinked. “You’re going to slay my demons for me, babe?” I meant it as a joke, but he didn’t laugh.

“Yes,” he replied. It was so simple, so matter-of-fact. My dark knight.

Excerpt:

Logan Mitchell didn’t like to f**k around when it came to business. He was a rarity, a half-breed human/alien who had survived the purge.

The product of an illicit affair between a charismatic human rebel and a sympathetic female alien from the planet Lonegal he was an outsider. He carried his father’s good looks and his mother’s iridescent blue eyes. His skin was tanned and he had the strength of the Lonegal alien race. He carried his father’s name. It was the only thing he had of his father’s as he’d been one of the first victim’s of the purge. He’d sacrificed himself so that his pregnant mother could escape. And charismatic rebel leader or not, all half-breed’s were regarded with disdain and disgust by much of both sides of his genealogical tree.

Faced by discrimination on both sides he took the only job open to most Lonegal half-breeds. The profession of a bounty hunter. Lonegalians were known for their tracking capabilities, especially when crossbred with humans.

The natural inquisitiveness of his human nature coupled with a thirst for vengeance that knew no bounds left him driven and crippled and burdened with a need to make all Lonegal criminals suffer, and the frail human ones pay for their debt to society.

Logan was good at what he did. He was one of the best, if not the best. And after laying waste to the planet Earth, a place still trying to recover from the rape of its natural resources, a planet he called home, he wanted the bastards responsible to pay. And those who had the misfortune of being left behind were first on his hit list.

He walked into his office and let the door slam behind him. Located in Kentucky one would never know it. The Lonegals had strip mined every last it of it, then cleared out most of the forested area. He smelled coffee. His secretary, Elizabeth must’ve come in. She was good at what she did. Research, errands, interviews. She did a lot of foot work, that quite frankly he didn’t have the personality for.

He poured himself a cup of coffee a picked up the pack of cigarettes sitting next to the pot. Like clockwork he thought.

He went to his desk and kicked the door shut and plopped down in his chair and lit up and took a long hard drag. He opened his desk drawer. The Jack Daniels was missing. “Elizabeth!” He shouted more than a little annoyed.

Elizabeth was old enough to be his mother and sometimes she had this annoying habit of trying to act like her. Truth be told he didn’t want to think about his mother. Or be reminded of her. It was too hard. Emotions period were too hard. So he tended not to think of his parents much at all. Although, at moments like these he couldn’t help but be reminded of them.

“Logan you’re going to need everything you got to track this one down,” Elizabeth said dropping the file on his desk.

The bounty hunter community had once been linked by an interglobal computer database. But once the humans drove the Lonegals off of the planet they decided to kill the internet as the world had once known it in hopes that it kept other interested aliens at bay. So far it had worked, at least, they thought it had.

He picked up the file and opened it. “What’s her crime?”

“She was labeled a terrorist by the Lonegals and she was supposed to a part of the bounty the Lonegals took in return for a mass release of human slaves.”

“Alabama Newsome what did you do to piss off my mother’s people?” He asked out loud. “Escaped Lonegal prison. Responsible for the deaths of two Lonegals. Has evaded capture on multiple occasions. Seems to have a sympathetic support base. Political criminal. Known contacts: Logan Mitchell Sr. Update: Still missing, Logan Mitchell Sr.- recently deceased January 2025.” He closed the file and let the gravity of what he’d just read set in. The woman in the picture couldn’t be much more than thirty years old. Which would have made her not even thought of when his father was first taken prisoner in his mother’s place. Yet if what he was to have read was correct his thought dead father had only recently died. He would’ve been sixty years old. He opened the file again. Why wouldn’t he have gotten in touch with his mother? He flipped the page. Alabama believed to be a Lonegal-Human half-breed. Also believed to be pregnant with Mitchell’s child. Early stage of pregnancy. Wanted alive for testing purposes.

He exhaled and closed the file. “Elizabeth.”

She set the bottle down on the desk. “Keep in mind that Lonegal General listed will be here in about an hour to talk about it.”

Excerpt:

Hands on Me

"Stop!" A man yelled.

The barrel of another gun met her inches from her face. She tensed, not from the gun, but from the familiar inflection in his voice. The position of both their weapons hid the man's face.

"Get in and lower your gun, or we'll both lose."

"Back up and lower yours, or you won't have a hand left." No one told her what to do, not ever again. The click of her cocking her weapon echoed around them.

He stepped back. "Get in and close the door."

With her gun still raised, she stepped and waited for her opponent to flinch first.

"Now." He moved a fraction of an inch.

She did the same, and with the silent acknowledgement they would both comply, they lowered their guns in unison. She almost shot herself in the foot at the sight of the man who greeted her. Before she made a mistake, she de-cocked her gun and shook her head. "Colin?" Her body betrayed her by trembling. Was this her punishment?

"Gwen." He shoved the gun in his waistband. "You're the one. I would have never guessed."

Think. She screamed at herself to remember her training, and not allow him to best her or distract her. She glanced around the room, giving her time to not look at him. Agents were supposed to be everyday people and blend in, but Colin Alexander stood out. From the moment she quite literally fell into his lap through a two-story ceiling three years ago, she wasn't sure why his agency chose such a standout. She supposed his combed-back black hair and golden eyes were some bizarre form of female torture.

Saph's Review:

"Hands On Me" is a well thought out short story of only 17 pages.  It's actually one of the best short stories I've read.  I wasn't left wondering what the hell just happened or where the rest of the details were.

When Agent Gwen Fredrick is sent on a mission assigned to her as a punishment, she had no idea that the man she was sent to "Shoot and Swoop" was an agent for the opposing team, Colin Alexander.  These two have history; a long and extremely sexually charged history.  As both enemies and bed partners, being in the same hotel room with one another brought confused feelings.  When Colin evokes their safe word and they agree to spend the night together, Gwen and Colin both break the rules and enact some deceitful actions behind the other's back---in one case, literally.  But will they be able to do what each agency requires of them simply walk away......Again?

For being only 17 pages, Kim Carlisle nails this story.  The dialogue between Gwen and Colin is animated, sensual, and smooth.  I was able to ascertain the plot and theme quickly which was excellently constructed by the author.  I found both characters to be interesting and likable.  The book flowed along at a nice, even pace and kept me intrigued from start to finish.  It was a pretty easy read.
