VBT, Excerpt, and Give@way: "Demos City Blues" (Book Two Demos City Series) by Jonathan Lister (Presented by Bewitching Book Tours)

Book Description:

War is coming to Demos City -- in more ways than one. Leon Gray struggles to balance a new job with helping his daughter Shauna navigate the landmine life of a full werewolf. Further complicating matters, a new Alpha has arrived in Demos, laying claim to the territory as her own -- including Leon. Meanwhile, the political information David Hastings unearthed may reveal a much darker truth than anyone expected. Demos City's corruption has deep roots, older than the bones of the town itself.

Can Gray and Hastings keep the city from tearing itself apart long enough to discover the source? Can it wait until Leon sees Shauna's high school play? As the first snow falls, the flakes may only have bloody footprints to greet them on the earth below.

Short Excerpt - Demos City Blues:
My cab ride home ended with the sight of Brad Morrow tearing ass out of Water Terrace Apartments. He tumbled onto the sidewalk in front of me. If I hadn’t stepped onto the street when I did, the kid would’ve kept on skidding into traffic. The cab driver took the opportunity to speed away without an offer to make change for the fare. I glared after the cab’s bumper, knelt down to check on the curtain rod of a teen. Shauna’s best friend was red in the cheeks and puffy, but otherwise unharmed.

“Hi Mr. Gray,” Brad said lifting his auburn head up. “Shauna’s having one of her episodes again. It really wasn’t my fault this time, I swear.”

“You’re forgetting something,” I said hoisting him up by a freckled arm. “Shauna’s on her way to being a woman now. The days of you being right are long gone.”

“Better hurry in there,” Brad said as he straightened his hooded sweatshirt. “She was barely keeping it together when I had to run. She might tear the whole apartment down this time.”

“Great,” I broke into a run without another word. The two flights of stairs leading up to my apartment blinked past in the longest seconds ever recorded. Prickly bubbles of nervousness careened through my chest as I reached my apartment door. No sound came from within. That isn’t necessarily a bad sign. Shauna could have herself under control and simply be trying to take a nap or braid her hair or kill a rabbit with her bare hands. Stay calm, Leon. She may need you to help her mind come back. Across the open-air hallway, Cyrus Landry poked his head out from his own apartment. He’s holding a phone in one hand and the doorknob in the other. At least the retired detective didn’t think to grab a pistol.

“Leon, thank God you’re here,” Cyrus said in a harsh whisper. “The way that boy flew out of your apartment I knew something was wrong. Your girl’s really having a tough time growing into her new self.”

“I’ve got this under control,” I said. “Don’t bother calling an ambulance. If shit really does hit the fan, a hospital won’t do her any good.” It’s damn near impossible to get a werewolf in full bestial form to fit into the back of an emergency vehicle. That’s not factoring in all the violence that would most likely ensue leading up to that. Cyrus disappeared back into his apartment, left his door open as I turned to open mine. The tangy flavors of sweat and an angry kind of hunger raked an elbow across my nose as I entered. I prepared myself for anything: to see my daughter unable to bring her human mind back from her bestial self or enraged into a stalking lust where anything that moved was prey. What caught me by surprise was how normal the apartment looked. All the furniture was in one piece, no claw marks were in the walls and Shauna was sitting as calm as a monk in my recliner. She was even reading some gossip magazine. Yet, the telling scents remained in the air.

“Where’s Hastings?” Shauna asked looking up from her reading. “Aren’t you supposed to babysit him or something?”

“That’s Mister Hastings, babydoll,” I responded with squinted eyes. “Saw Brad downstairs. You want to tell me why he ran out of here like the building was on fire?”

“Who? Brad? He probably had to meet his Dad for something. You know Brad, always running away from things.” Shauna gave a nervous laugh, turned a page in her magazine. Outwardly she appeared very much her teenage self, dressed in jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt. Her shirt was hanging a bit loose, and she wasn’t wearing her usual Chuck Taylors. She was going through this size phase – every article of clothing had to be some measure of form fitting. I supposed it was part of a continuing teenaged plan to leave me bald before I turned forty. That gave me an idea.

“Stand up,” I said in my deepest, most commanding voice.

“Dad, stop being weird,” Shauna said. “I’m comfortable right where I am.”

“God!” she exclaimed throwing down her magazine. “Fine, I’m getting up okay?” She stood, keeping her arms close to her sides. Shauna didn’t fold her arms in disgust as she usually does when she disagreed with me.

“What’s wrong with your shirt?” I asked. “What? It’s my softball t-shirt,” she responded. “The school gave them all to us when we won remember?” That’s right. Shauna’s softball team won a state championship. I was a solid ray of giddy stupid sunshine watching her on the mound, having idle conversations with college scouts pretending not to be college scouts. I actually had to shake my head to jostle my thoughts back into the present. Shauna thought that little comment would be sufficient to allow her escape. Oh, not this time. Dad has gotten wise to his daughter’s ninja tactics. Pride cometh before the werewolf teenager freaks out and eats some human’s baby.

(In this excerpt Jael has just pulled a stone from the wish bag in an odd Salem Wiccan shop.)

“Oh, Jael, that is an odd-looking stone.” Arcona reached for Jael’s hand to tip the sparkling stone toward the light. “It’s beautiful when things you’d never think would fuse together mix.” She stared at the stone in wonder. “The world is full of weird stuff, isn’t it?”

Jael looked from the two-sided stone to her friend. “It is different.” She glanced at Witch Casey to see if she had any advice as to why she’d chosen such a stone.

“Interesting, but not surprising.” Witch Casey shook her head with her lips firmly pinched together.

Jael couldn’t read the woman’s eccentric gesture.

“A dual stone is often attracted to an undecided person,” Witch Casey spoke tersely.

“Undecided?” Jael stiffened and crossed her arms in a defensive manner. She’d been often accused of being indecisive in the past, and it hurt. Obviously Witch Casey had been eavesdropping. “Are you referring to me?”

“Of course I’m referring to you.” Witch Casey planted her fist firmly on her hip as she confronted Jael. “You’re the one holding the dual stone, not me.”

“What do you mean by undecided?” Jael knew where this was going. Witch Casey would now deliver a trite and highly predictable forecast about her future love life. She braced for the safe little clichés she knew were headed her way.

Witch Casey arced her hands dramatically through the air. “Your heart is always in two places at once and refuses to choose a lasting home. Am I right?”

Jael slightly recoiled. Witch Casey was right. The way the woman spoke with utter authority sent a shiver up her spine.

All her life she’d rushed toward one goal when secretly desiring another. She longed for a stable relationship, even a family, but another rogue part of her soul wanted to ditch her responsibilities, pick up a camera, and flee to the exotic wilds of Africa to fulfill her creative dreams. The same went for men. She could never make up her mind. Variety was the spice of life.

“There might be some truth in what you’re saying,” Jael sheepishly answered Witch Casey.

Witch Casey’s eyes flashed. “Might?”

Arcona leaned close to Jael’s ear. “I remember our last semester. You were always dating at least two guys at once and trying to keep it a secret. It never stayed secret.”

Jael silently admitted her love life was a disaster of indecision. She’d never met a man who fulfilled all her needs. Okay, maybe one man—Roarke, the gorgeous guy at her office, was a thrilling date for a friends-with-benefits type of evening, but a more solid relationship never quite gelled. Deep down she knew why.

They were two of a kind. Roarke was almost as undecided and commitment shy as she was. He would pant after her with lustful looks, coax and almost beg her to visit his apartment. When she gave in, the sex was always hot. Roarke was a total turn-on. Her hopes would rise that maybe Roarke was the one, and then nothing would happen for weeks at a time. No pursuit, no invitations back to his bed. It was as if Roarke would deny himself her company until he couldn’t stand it a moment longer; then he would call.

She’d noticed Roarke’s nightstand was fully stocked with condoms and every exotic brand of lube on the market, so she had to suspect he enjoyed other lovers as well, which hurt. She wanted to be someone special to him, and apparently she wasn’t. Obviously there was another.

“Would you like me to do a card reading for you?” Witch Casey interrupted the silence. “It might clarify a few of those undecided thoughts.”

“I don’t know…” Jael’s gaze darted anxiously between her friends. Their visit was nearly at an end. She wondered if her friends would willingly wait while Witch Casey sorted through the confusing details of her elusive love life. Probably not.

“You should do it.” Arcona shot Jael an encouraging smile. “Accept the card reading. Isn’t that why we walked in here in the first place—to get a little insight?”

Power of the Moon (Volume 1)

Guest Blog by Tina!

Welcome to Sapphyria's Steamy Book Reviews today. Your book has actually graced the pages of my original blog, Sapphyria's Book Reviews, which I have since made YA and clean(er) adult friendly. But who cares about clean books right now....I wanna hear you talk about Cole :)

Detective Cole Barnett: The making of a character.

Those of you keeping up with the Power of the Moon blog tour may already know the original idea of Cole came from a night ride-a-long with my husband while he was on duty. I’ve always been interested in government "secret" task forces, such as Men in Black. I also love the Old West and I grew up with Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, and Bonanza. Most I watched as reruns but if there was a western on, it was playing on my TV. I took things I love the most and started molding Cole.

He’s one of my favorite characters to write because I can push him to the edge, where I like to keep him. My vampires want to hunt. They want to feed and kill things that get in their way or provoke them, because it’s their nature. With the enforcement of paranormal law, they can’t do that. So not only do we have rouge vampires trying to break the laws, we have Sector 13 trying to enforce them. And, Sector 13 is held to a higher standard with their own set of rules. Cole’s perfected his control and he’s very good at his job. He’s never lost it and killed a paranormal creature on the job unless absolutely necessary. This is the base of his character, and now I start to unravel him—one layer at a time. He’s so yummy.

I started writing a back-story on Cole’s life last year and I think it will give readers a better understanding of who he is. I'm looking forward to putting that out for my readers.

Saph's Review:

This is a re-release of Power of the Moon by Tina Carreiro.

I read and reviewed the original release on my blog On October 25, 2011 (a year ago already...boy time does fly) at Sapphyria's Book Reviews - Power of the Moon Review.

Here is the copied review from my other blog:

An awesome paranormal romantic mystery. When Mia angers a man with weird glowing eyes trying to protect Art, her whole world spins out of control—and into realms she never believed existed. When the cops are sent to take her statement, after Mr. Glowing Eyes nabs Art from the gas station where she works, she isn’t expecting, tall, dark, and handsome Cole Barnett. He lights her up like no one ever has; and, aggravatingly enough, rejects him at all costs…..A big drag for me and the only thing in the book that I didn’t particularly like.

I understand the reasoning behind Mia’s continual rejection of Cole---there are many reasons; not all just because he is a vampire, and they are good and well developed reasons—but after a while I wanted to just choke her, bury her, and take her place inside the book. Everyone should be so lucky to have a man be so totally devoted to them, in love with them, and so very protective---all while being hotter than Hell ever dreamed it could be! (Don't get me wrong....My hubby is all those things....but sheesh Mia!)

As Mia develops through the book you get a good look at the powers she has always possessed. There is also the realization that she has been unaware of what she really consisted of. She gets tossed into a world that her mother would ramble about during the days of Mia’s youth. She is exposed to love, hatred, violence, and otherworldly creatures. Attempts on her life leave her exposed and vulnerable to things that she doesn’t understand but comes to realize. There is a small reference to Indian heritage, which seems to be quite the rage right now; although, I would have never thought to put them hand-in-hand with paranormal beings such as vampires. The passages are well placed, though, and helps put much of the story into perspective.

I love the reference to World of Warcraft: "Chainmail teddy, compliments of World of Warcraft--warrior geekdom--now all I need is some rage points and I'll have this vamp defeated."

Love It!! I play WoW and have no problem admitting it :)

There is also some humor in the book...which is very important to me!

"Woman, come to me." Bass's voice lowered as he commander her. Mia stared at Bass, and then briefly looked back at Cole.

"Ooooh...look honey, Evet is using his big boy voice." (T. Carreiro, 2011).

This is Book 1 in the Power of the Moon series. According to Tina’s website: there will be 4 books in the series.

Please Note: This book contains "adult scenes."

I do have a copy of the revised novel, however, didn't have time to re-read/review it and make changes, if any, as necessary to the above review before my stop on the tour.

Surrounded by Temptation
Woods Family Series Book 3
By Mandy Harbin

When Krista needs Ariel’s biochemical expertise because her new boyfriend can turn into a mountain lion, Ariel thinks her sister has lost her mind. But the possibility of a major discovery like this is too much of a temptation to ignore. Create a drug to stop a shifter from forcing a mating? Only if she got to test his sexual limits herself.

Rob thinks Ariel is an angel in disguise, and he immediately knows she’s the one for him. But is he strong enough to resist his animal’s need to claim her once the temptation begins?

WARNING:  This book contains a shifter who must resist his feral need to mate and a biochemist who is hell-bent on testing his sexual limits. You’ll never look at science the same way again.

Reader advisory: This book contains graphic language and explicit sex.

When Krista opened the door and they stepped in to Rob’s cabin, Ariel kept her expression even…with great difficulty. Rob was shirtless and bound to a wooden chair. His worn jeans hung low and showed how cut he actually was. His legs were tied to the chair, too. God, his bare feet even looked sexy. But what was the hottest thing about him was his gaze. The way his eyes peered into her. Like they were already alone and he was ready to pounce.
Rob growled, showing fangs, and she gasped. She didn’t know they had fangs like that unless they’d already shifted. Maybe she should’ve gotten some additional information from Krista and Mikaela before walking into the lion’s den. Literally.
“Come,” Rob rasped. “Now.” His arms flexed within their bindings and Ariel went rigid, wondering if they’d hold.
Toby growled next to him, his eyes focused solely on his brother.
“We should get started,” Josh said.
“I-I have the medication right here.” Ariel started to step forward, but Josh threw his hand up, stopping her progression, and moved toward her, blocking her view from Rob.
And apparently Rob didn’t like that because a blood curdling roar came from his direction.
Krista squeaked and jumped next to her at the same time Josh stepped to the side, allowing Rob to see his fill. Toby’s head snapped in Krista’s direction at her distress, then whipped toward Rob. He crouched in front of his brother, a menacing growl slipping pass his lips. Ariel shivered. For some reason the softer growl from Toby sounded more deadly and a hell of a lot more terrifying than the loud roar Rob made.
Rob hissed at Toby and wiggled in his chair, struggling to get free.
Josh stepped up and took the syringe from Ariel. “I’ll do you. You stay here.”
When Ariel starting giving Josh the instructions, Rob’s gaze flew to her, snarling. She quickly finished the steps Josh needed to administer the medication and watched as he approached Rob from the side, making sure to not to block his view of Ariel.
She watched as Josh bent in front of Rob and blindly handed the needle over to Toby. When Josh grabbed the hem of Rob’s jeans, Ariel swallowed. There was no turning back now. She watched in rapt fascination as Josh unfastened Rob’s jeans and slowly slid the zipper down so he could get to the injection site.
“Damn,” Ariel breathed when Rob’s rock hard erection sprang free. He was freaking huge!
Rob had been making low growls and hisses at his brother as he worked the closure on his jeans, but when Ariel spoke, his attention snapped back to her. His growl got softer, broken. What the… Is he purring?
“I think he likes that you find his, um, member impressive,” Krista whispered.
Toby looked at Krista and growled. “You shouldn’t be looking. You only look at me.”
Ariel watched as her sister fought a smile. But she turned to the side, giving her back to them. “Better, sweetie?”
His next growl sounded more like a groan. “I love your ass.”
She wiggled it and the animalistic sound got louder, playful.
“Chill you two,” Mikaela said, then turned to Ariel, “Just like a couple of newlyweds.” She shook her head but smiled. “I think that’s good, Josh.”
“Okay, kitten. I want you and the other ladies to stay over there until we’re sure he won’t break free and the drugs are working.” Josh lifted his arm, needle poised for entry.
“Wait!” Ariel shrieked and quickly stepped forward. She needed to gather as much data as she could. “Can you tell me how you feel?” she asked Rob softly.
“Why don’t you grab my dick and tell me how I feel?”
Rob roared. “That wasn’t a request. You will submit to me. You are mine.”
Without warning, Josh stabbed the needle into Rob’s hip. Rob yelped and hissed at his brother.
Ariel watched him as he struggled in his chair, trying to break free, growling and hissing at everyone, at no one.
Then minutes later, his movements eased, his head falling back as he gasped in air, sweat trickling down his temple. No one moved for what seemed like an eternity. Ariel just watched. Waited.
Rob slowly moved his head, his eyes seeking her. She held her breath as he found her, eager to hear him now that he’d received his first dose.
“I-I think I’m okay.”
“Do you feel like you need to mate with her?” Josh asked.
Rob frowned. “I believe I have control of myself. My lion.”
Ariel stepped closer and Toby tensed beside Rob.
“Can you tell me how you feel now?”
Rob chuckled. “I guess I can’t give you the same answer as before, huh?”
Ariel laughed nervously. He seemed relaxed. He wasn’t growling or hissing or fighting his restraints. She quickly scanned his body. Mostly relaxed. His penis was still fully erect. She turned to Josh. “Take his vital signs. Let’s make sure he’s not about to have a heart attack before I continue.” She dug into her bag, pulling out a swab kit. “And here, take this and swab the inside of his cheek while you’re at it.”
Josh worked quickly as Ariel watched. The three brothers seemed to be staring at each other intently. Then she saw an infinitesimal shake of Rob’s head.
“They’re speaking telepathically.”
Ariel nodded. A few weeks ago she was knee deep in compost and now she was about to be on her knees... um, yeah. She knew. Her nerves were back in full force now that Rob seemed to be doing well under the medication.
“This is amazing!” Josh said as he clapped Rob on the back. “You seem healthy as a horse. I can’t believe you’re not trying to fight to get to her anymore.”
“Let’s not do a victory dance yet,” Ariel warned. “This is all part of the process.”
“Right, of course,” Josh said, grinning. He looked at Rob and chuckled. Then he looked at his mate. “I think we can go.”
“C’mon, Krista,” Mikaela said. “We need to get Jack medicated, too.”
Toby watched Rob, eyes narrowing. “You’re sure you’re in control? If you hurt one hair on her head, I will make you bleed. Understood?”
Rob nodded.
Toby straightened and walked toward Krista. “I can stay. Whatever she’s going to do, I can watch from the other side of the room to make sure he doesn’t do anything to hurt her. She’s very tiny and he’s incredibly strong.”
Ariel’s face got really hot all of the sudden. No way in hell did she want a witness to this next part. She glanced at Rob, trying to think of something quickly to say that’d keep her from having an audience.
Rob’s head cocked to the side as he watched her. Without looking away, he said, “That won’t be necessary, bro.”
Toby made a frustrated sound at the back of his throat. His eyes on his mate. “It’s your call, baby.”
Krista looked at Ariel. Ariel hoped the pleading in her eyes was working.
“Let’s go, sweetie, and leave her to her work.”
Ariel sighed, relieved.
Toby’s shoulders relaxed as he wound his arm around his mate. “Okay.”
“You will let us know the minute you need something, anything. Right?” Krista gave Ariel a stern look, and Ariel nodded.
“Good luck,” Mikaela said, a small smile playing at her lips as she and Josh left. Krista and Toby left right behind them. Her sister looked one last time over her shoulder before shutting the door.
Ariel was now alone with Rob. The relieved feeling from moments ago now gone. There really was no backing out. The compound had worked. She’d seen it with her own eyes. He was virile and determined to have her one minute then lucid and calm the next. Still sexy has hell though. God, she needed to let that thought go. Rob was hot, not doubt about that, but she was here to do a job. A job she was beginning to wonder if she could keep herself detached in order to complete.
Just do it.
She walked toward Rob. He watched her. Eyes not animalistic. Teeth not fangs. Just watched like someone who was curious about what movie was showing at the theater. But as she got closer, she noticed the muscles in his forearms corded. There seemed to be more lurking behind the surface than his calm curiosity.
“Um, okay.” Her voice cracked, so she took a steadying breath. “This is a bit unorthodox—“
“Compared to what? The family of werewolves who live in Dallas?” Ariel gasp and he chuckled. “Kidding, angel.”
She laughed nervously, realizing that part of her nerves was due to how attractive this man was. This would be so much easier if he were hideous, like a mangy old alley cat, missing an eye and covered in bald patches.
“Right, well, unorthodox is subjective in this sense.” She took a few steps closer. Now he had to tilt his head up to look at her. “What I mean is the way I’m going to test the effectiveness of this drug and your endurance to it isn’t what I’d call standard protocol.”
“I’ll do whatever you want.”
Ariel cleared her throat and shifted her weight to her other leg, stalling. Here goes nothing. She stepped right up into his personal space. “Do you find me attractive?”
A small growl rumbled in his chest, but he didn’t let it out. “Incredibly. You’re the sexiest woman I’ve ever seen, and animal or not, I would love nothing more than to be buried deep inside you.”
Good. If only his animal side wanted her, then she wasn’t sure how well this testing method would work. She smiled at him, her tongue slipping out to wet her lips. Rob watched as she traced her upper lip, and he moaned softly.
“I’m going to tease you, Rob. You’ll be surrounded by temptation greater than any you’ve ever experienced. I’m going to drive you so insane with want that you’ll be begging me for it.”

Blog Barrage: "See Me" by Natalie Nicole Bates (Presented by CBLS)

Carly Anders  is hearing voices in her head. Another one of her kind is trying to contact her. She knows of the malevolent freaks—others who are eternal like her and seek out the weak to inflict pain upon. For years, Carly has held up huge protective walls to keep herself and her secrets safe. Now, physically and mentally exhausted, Carly needs protection and rest.

She accepts the invitation to visit an internet friend who needs help appraising a collection of antique photographs.  The situation is not ideal, but Carly hopes a male presence in her life will deter the determined suitor who haunts her thoughts and dreams.

Daniel Tremont is not what Carly is expecting.

The former funeral director has a secret of his own. Not only is he eternal like Carly, he is her creation from all those years before—her abomination she thought she killed.

Daniel has been searching for Carly for years. He knows she is the piece of his life that he has been missing for so long. Now that he has found her, he has no intentions of letting her go.

He waved a hand in front of her face, but she didn’t blink. The lights are on, but no one’s home.

“Carly, my angel,” he whispered and cupped her cheek into his palm. He revealed in the silkiness and warmth of her skin. Still, she didn’t react. She was almost…a zombie.

His own body jerked in reaction to the fear she was emanating. She was clearly sleepwalking and in the throes of one hell of a nightmare, yet she didn’t cry out any longer. It was all now playing out inside her mind.

Charlotte, see me,” he implored.

Her lips twitched at the mention of her real name.

“See me,” he repeated.

Suddenly, her body gave way and she collapsed. Catching her, he lifted her into his arms and carried her to the bed. As he laid her down, her breathing became ragged. He placed a hand over her heart as it raced, and passed healing calmness through his hand, feeling the energy pulsate against her skin. Beneath his hand, he would feel her heartbeat slow to a normal rhythm.

“Daniel?” Her voice was mere caress.

“I’m here, my angel. You’re having a nightmare. You’re frightened. It’s okay now, I’m here, and I will never leave you,” he promised.

“Everyone leaves, Daniel. You can’t understand, you can’t…” Her body started to tremble.

He climbed onto the bed and straddled her body. Leaning close to her face, he said, “Carly, let go of your fear. I can take it. Let go and see me,” he commanded.

Her breath came out in a whoosh, and a wall of fear and resistance hit him like a blow from above. It wasn’t exactly painful, more startling than anything else.

His vision flip-flopped, and he could see an image from inside her mind of two souls forever entwined as the result of one act. It made perfect sense. She was reliving the day their souls became one. The day of the fire.

He then saw black, suffocating water. She was reliving her own death, as well.

As the visions left him, he was consumed with the mishmash of fear, loneliness, and resistance within her.

He had to make her understand that it was over. “I will never leave you, Carly. That is my promise to you,” he insisted.

A flicker of life ignited in her eyes. Her hands came up to his face, and to Daniel’s surprise, tears bubbled from his own eyes. He was releasing the pain and fear he had absorbed from his beloved.

“I’m so sorry, Daniel, so sorry,” she murmured.

“There’s nothing to be sorry for, my love. It’s over. It’s time to move forward now.”

“You don’t understand what I am, Daniel.”

“I do understand, Carly. I am what you are. See me for what I am.”

In his mind, he could see the moving clockwork gears of her thoughts once again as she tried to process what he was telling her to be true.

“Just accept it, and let’s move forward.”

She drew his face to hers and her lips parted beneath his. Time blurred and he drank in the essence of his Carly. Her soft, barely covered curves molded themselves against his the hard planes of his body. Her hands were under his t-shirt, her fingers stroking him.

If he pressed on, he knew she wouldn’t refuse him. But in her vulnerable state, he wouldn’t let anything progress further that night. Carly needed time to process everything that happened. There was plenty of time to pursue a physical relationship. They weren’t going any where…he hoped.

Review: "Hex and the Single Witch" (Vehicle City Vampires, Book 1) by Roxanne Rhoads

Anwyn Rose is descended from a long line of powerful witches yet she can barely cast spells young witchlings have mastered. She has one functioning witch gift, the power of knowing, which she puts to good use as a Detective on Flint’s Preternatural Investigation Team.

It’s a new era in Vehicle City, supernaturals are running the town.

The P.I.T has their hands full with paranormal crimes. Top priority is a serial killer, who appears to be a vampire, draining young women in the city.

Anwyn is on the case with her sexy partner Detective Mike Malone. Complicating things is her relationship Galen, a vampire who looks more guilty than innocent, although Anwyn trusts her instincts even if her power is on the fritz.

Mysterious spells, compromising situations, and a possible demon on the loose make it hard to focus on the case, but Anwyn has to make things right before the human police execute the wrong vampire.

Hex and the Single Witch contains magick, a little bit of mystery, a lot of supernatural mayhem, and a sexy love triangle that will leave you wanting more.

Saph's Review:

Anwyn Rose is the supernatural liaison of the P.I.T. (Preternatural Investigation Team) Crew in Flint, MI. She is a witch with the ability to "read" a  person by touching them; whether they are alive or dead.  Her talent is being put to good use in Vehicle City where a string of murders is plaguing this dying city.  It seems that Flint has a new vampire in town that is killing off women left and right but able to block himself from Anwyn's sight as she reads the victims.

Anwyn works along side Mike Malone, a hot Detective with his eyes on her...ALL of her if had his way.  He is not of the supernatural but is also part of the P.I.T. Crew.  His sexual banter with Annie, as he calls her, is intense and, even though it makes her blush, she is totally into it. When Mike finally gets a chance with Anwyn will he be able to persuade her that a human male is what she needs/wants/truly desires?

Galen is a sexy, ancient vampire that caught Anwyn's eye at a party thrown by her best friend, and fellow witch, Mel.  He is her secret crush but turns into something more as the story progresses. It seems that he is being targeted as the source of all the dead bodies strewn about in Flint.  Anwyn doesn't believe it to be true but can't hide from the situation, causing there to be a tad bit of tension.

Anywn gets embroiled in sexual situations with both Mike and Galen that puts a strain on both guys, as well as herself. This love triangle between Anywn and her men puts a sexually charged twist on the novel.  Jealous human versus jealous vamp...She is attracted to both men but will she end up with one or neither of them?

I really enjoyed "Hex and the Single Witch."  I'm a former Flint girl - I grew up outside of Flint but spent a lot of time in the city and township limits.  I was able to place each and every reference to a street or location in my mind.  When Anwyn exited I-75 at Pierson Rd. to go into Flushing, I could picture Meijer, and all of the restaurants she would have passed, the Bowling Alley where I used to be on leagues, and the Rite Aid and US-23 Supermarket (which I think is now a Kroger) as she got to Elms Rd.

The character development, overall, was done well, and we got a little bit of the who's and why's about each main player.  The history behind Anwyn's parent's is a crucial part of one plot line, and Ms. Rhoads does a great job in introducing it and weaving it throughout the novel.  The history behind Galen is also a huge part of the entire novel and is explained, developed, and drawn out appropriately.

There is definitely some strange magic in Flint; some good, some not so much.

The ending includes a nice, mild cliffhanger, which did it's intended job.....I am now left wanting more!
